Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon have sold over four million copies in the United States, Nintendo announced today. The two specifically stand at 4.5 million since launching in late November. Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon were also the second and third best-selling games during the month of December as reported by NPD.

Nintendo also said today that the last quarter of 2016 was the “best-selling quarter for software in Nintendo 3DS history”. 7.3 million copies of first-party Nintendo games were sold during that period. For the seventh month in a row, sales grew year-over-year thanks to the likes of Pokemon, Super Mario Maker, and evergreen titles such as Mario Kart 7.

The November 2016 NPD report brought lots of good news for Nintendo. Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon were the big winners for Nintendo, with the two games marking the biggest debut in franchise history. The NES Classic Edition also sold nearly 200,000 units in its first month in the United States.

NPD group’s Mat Piscatella has also now revealed that 3DS experienced its highest monthly physical software spend in the history of the platform. That’s incredible to think about, given how the 3DS has been around for well over five years.

The success of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon has been well-documented, including in the United States. With the November NPD report now having been published, the two games are confirmed as having the strongest launch in the history of the franchise. NPD analyst Sam Naji said today that the two games sold 8 percent more units than Pokemon Black/White, the previous record holders. That’s despite the fact that Sun/Moon had 19 fewer days on the market.

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon also boosted 3DS as a whole. “Unit sales of 3DS hardware grew 59 percent versus November a year ago, the sixth straight month of year-on-year growth,” Naji said.

This month’s NPD report is in, and it brings along some impressive news for the NES Classic Edition. In the United States last month, the hardware sold 196,000 units.

The NES Classic Edition would have undoubtedly sold more had more stock been put on store shelves. Nintendo has had a difficult time keeping up with demand, but has promised to ship more units leading into 2017.

Two Nintendo-published games debuted in the United States last month: Paper Mario: Color Splash and Disney Magical World 2. We now have sales data for both. Paper Mario’s new entry sold about 100,000 units while the 3DS game is estimated to have sold in the neighborhood of 10,000 copies.

Data is also in for other 3DS titles. Yo-kai Watch 2, which shipped in September, sold under 50,000 units. Dragon Quest VII also came out last month and unfortunately appears to have poor legs. It was outsold by the likes of Pokemon X/Y, Smash Bros., and Pokken Tournament at retail.

Lastly, we can say that Skylanders Imaginators sold 66,000 units while Just Dance 2017 moved under 30,000 copies.

The October 2016 report is now fully available, but it’s pretty quiet on the Nintendo front. No Wii U or 3DS titles were among the top ten best-selling games of the month.

On the bright side, the 3DS itself saw another uptick in the United States. Analyst Sam Naji says the handheld saw its fifth straight month of year-on-year growth. Pokemon and Monster Hunter Generations are thought to have been two catalysts.

Naji said:

“The 3DS experienced its fifth straight month of year-on-year growth. Both unit sales and consumer spending for October grew 12 percent as average pricing was flat year on year. It is likely that continued consumer interest in the Pokémon franchise and Monster Hunter: Generations has driven this growth.”

NPD’s preliminary report for September 2016 sales in the United States is starting to make the rounds. AstronautClaire, who has access to the data, was kind enough to share some early information.

Yo-kai Watch 2 was one of Nintendo’s big releases last month. It launched in two versions at the very end of September: Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls. Between September 30 and October 1, the game sold about 35,000 copies. It’s somewhat tough to comment on Yo-kai Watch 2’s performance thus far given that we have just a couple of days worth of data. However, it is worth noting that Leo Burnett’s Yo-kai Watch 2 commercials have aired 803 times across Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, so quite a bit of money is being spent on advertising.

On Thursday, NPD released a chart for the top ten best-selling games in the United States during August. Nintendo has since commented on its own performance.

According to Nintendo, the “excitement for the Pokemon brand” led to a big increase in sales of its handheld line. The 2DS experienced a 500 percent bump in 2DS sales year-over-year while 3DS hardware also rose by 83 percent.

With software, physical and digital first-party 3DS sales increased by 57 percent. Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire were both on the software charts.

Nintendo also shared some positive news about Wii U. Software sales on the console were up 30 percent in the U.S. last month.
