Iwata talks Nintendo’s approach to paid DLC
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in 3DS, General Nintendo, News | 0 comments
Nintendo has reaffirmed that not all of its games will offer paid downloadable content. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is one such example.
CEO Satoru Iwata, discussing the company’s approach to downloadable content at an investor’s briefing Q&A a few days ago, said:
“…However, we do not intend to make downloadable or add-on content available for every type of game. We would like to supply consumers with only add-on or downloadable content which they are happy to pay for as compensation for creative work. For example, some might say that it would be unbelievably profitable to provide paid add-on content for “Animal Crossing: New Leaf,” but we were concerned that a game in which you enjoy yourself more by the power of money would not be suitable, and we decided to avoid such a feature after an intensive discussion with the development team. On the other hand, we are selling sets of new courses for “New Super Mario Bros. 2″ by download and obtaining a very good response from those who have actually bought and played them. We see vast potential in this sort of add-on content. In short, we would like to find the type of add-on content consumers will find enjoyable in each game. We intend to basically create add-on content with which we will be able to make long-term relationships with our consumers.”
Iwata on those who say Nintendo lacks innovation
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News | 0 comments
Nintendo is sometimes called out for relying on past franchises and recycling IPs. President Satoru Iwata addressed this belief during a investor’s briefing Q&A last week, noting that with series such as Mario and Pokemon, “we are trying to push the boundaries every time we develop a series title.” He added that “those who assume that Nintendo lacks innovation might be making judgments by looking at our game titles without actually experiencing them.”
Here are Iwata’s thoughts in full:
“…One thing I would like to add, though, is that it might be true that Mario and Pokémon are franchises with long histories and tradition behind them, but we are trying to push the boundaries every time we develop a series title. In other words, the reason Pokémon has been continuously popular for about 15 years and Mario for almost 30 years now is that each sequel has something novel. So I frankly think that those who assume that Nintendo lacks innovation might be making judgments by looking at our game titles without actually experiencing them. Without ongoing innovation, even Mario and Pokémon would have lost their popularity long before.”
Iwata discusses VOD partners, Nintendo TVii-like service for Europe/Japan

Nintendo is partnering with a number of VOD partners such as Netflix for its US Nintendo TVii service for Wii U. There are also other companies in talks with the publisher.
President Satoru Iwata told investors last week that a Nintendo TVii-like service could head to Europe and Japan. Iwata said they’ll be “taking into account how people watch television in each region, and I believe I will be able to share more details in the not-so-distant future.”
One other important note, which we’ll highlight here:
“Also I regret having to have used Nintendo’s limited game development resources in order to provide non-gaming features on Wii. This time, we are working to see how we can enrich our services without having to rely on Nintendo’s internal development resources, and because the Wii U system itself is now fairly powerful, I believe that standard web technologies can be applied to achieve a sufficient degree of speed and convenience, and we will deploy our services in this fashion in the future.”
Head past the break for Iwata’s full comments.

Miyamoto tidbits: online, Retro making Zelda, more
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News, Wii, Wii U | 0 comments
Following Shigeru Miyamoto’s acceptance of the Prince of Asturias Award, Gamereactor chatted with the legendary Nintendo designer about a variety of topics. Miyamoto talked about online (specifically related to the Wii U), the possibility of Retro making a Zelda game (yes, again!), and more.
Check out a few tidbits from the interview below.
– Premise: almost every Wii U user will already has Wiimote, Nunchuk and even WM+ – this gives freedom to devs. IR alternate pointing to both screens highly possible
– Miyamoto-san doesn’t think they fell behind with online, but now is the right moment and you ‘have’ to be online with the Wii U.
– Retro qualified for Zelda game, but being in America would leave less-dependent games for them (story, design Japan-only)
– They’ll encourage handwritten chatting with Miiverse
– 2 current goals are: own creation and creating teams which doesn’t need him.
– iPad Mini screen size is another indication they took the right path with GamePad design

Silicon Knights’ fall from glory, Eternal Darkness 2 was in the works, less than five staffers currently employed
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in GameCube, General Nintendo, News | 0 comments
A report surfaced on Kotaku today that paints a pretty bad picture of Silicon Knights, the studio behind Eternal Darkness.
One former employee told the site that the company suffered because of Denis Dyack’s authoritative control. Once ties with Nintendo were basically broken, Dyack was completely in charge of all operations and the Big N wasn’t there to provide any support.
A source said:
“This is the reason for the extremely high quality games that SK built a reputation on. Nintendo was going to put their name on the game, so it had to be ‘Nintendo quality.'”
