Mario Kart World was originally planned as a game for the current Switch, Nintendo has revealed.
That piece of information comes from an official interview that went live today. The team was finding it a challenge to incorporate everything it wanted to do, including ramping up from 12 racers to 24 players. Programmer Kenta Sato said various sacrifices were considered, including “toning down the visuals, lowering the resolution, and we even considered dropping the frame rate to 30 FPS in some cases.” However, the move to Nintendo Switch 2 allowed for everything to be kept intact.

In a new interview issued today, Nintendo commented on why Mario Kart World isn’t called Mario Kart 9.
Before the game was unveiled, there was plenty of speculation about what the name would be. Many thought that it would be Mario Kart 9 as that makes sense to follow up on Mario Kart 8 / Deluxe. On the other hand, some fans also argued that Nintendo could skip to Mario Kart 10, given that we saw Mario Kart Tour in 2019. It turned out that the company went in a different direction, and that’s where we ended up with Mario Kart World.

Nintendo on how Mario Kart World came to be, development started in 2017

Nintendo has spoken about the origins of Mario Kart World, revealing that the project started developing in 2017.
According to producer Kosuke Yabuki, the team first began prototyping in March 2017 following the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch. Production then moved forward officially by the end of that year.

Troubles Witches Final Episode 01: Daughters of Amalgam coming to Nintendo Switch worldwide

ININ Games, in partnership with Studio Siesta, today announced Troubles Witches Final Episode 01: Daughters of Amalgam is getting a release on Nintendo Switch. It will be available in late summer.
The game, a comical witch side-scrolling shoot ’em up game, originally released in 2007. Japan first received the Nintendo Switch version in 2023.

Riot Control Simulator announced for Nintendo Switch 2

Polish indie studio Corpix Games, together with publishers Wildlands Interactive and Ultimate Games SA, has confirmed that Riot Control Simulator is coming to Nintendo Switch 2.
Riot Control Simulator is a realistic simulator in which players take on the role of law enforcement officers tasked with managing street protests. The story mode places players within the machinery of authority in a nation slowly descending into authoritarianism.
While an exact release date has not been shared, the game is slated to arrive on Nintendo’s next-gen platform sometime in 2026.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the original creator of Donkey Kong, has spoken about the decision to change Donkey Kong’s design.
DK will look quite a bit different when he stars in his upcoming game Donkey Kong Bananza. There’s been a lot of talk about the design, starting with when we got our first look at the character in the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement that gave a brief glimpse of Mario Kart World. But things actually go further back than that – Donkey Kong’s design was different in The Super Mario Bros. Movie as well.

Ryukyu is this week’s Arcade Archives game on Nintendo Switch

Thanks to Hamster, we have confirmation that Arcade Archives Ryukyu will be dropping on Nintendo Switch this week. It’s slated for tomorrow, May 22.
Ryukyu originally comes from Success, having first launched in 1990. The puzzle game involves trying to complete the highest-scoring poker hand.

Nintendo shows updated design for Diddy Kong [update: another piece of art]

May 15: Donkey Kong is getting a brand new design for Donkey Kong Bananza on Nintendo Switch 2, and it now appears that Nintendo is updating the look for Diddy Kong as well. However, the adjustments are much more subtle.
A news post was sent out to Nintendo Switch owners this week which shows how Diddy Kong has changed. There are a few main differences. First, Diddy Kong now has teeth. There’s also the fact that the Nintendo logo has been removed from the character’s hat. Finally, his feet have been adjusted for whatever reason.

New Super Mario, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing LEGO sets leaked [update: release date]

April 30: Thanks to the continued partnership between LEGO and Nintendo, a new wave of sets have been revealed based on the Super Mario, Mario Kart, and Animal Crossing franchises. Everything shown today is coming this August.
Technically, no announcements have been made yet. However, as we’ve seen with past leaks, retailers have come through with the news a bit earlier than expected.
