Sonic Superstars Switch

SEGA has shared with us some Switch-specific screenshots from Sonic Superstars.

This comes as a bit surprise as we usually have to wait quite a bit to see how some multiplatform titles are shaping up on Nintendo’s console. The wait can sometimes be so long that fans don’t have a good idea until launch. This is actually something that recently happened with LEGO 2K Drive since all assets were not from the Switch version.

Sonic Superstars Arzest

According to Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka, Arzest is leading development on Sonic Superstars.

Iizuka shared the news in an interview with Eurogamer. He said SEGA “needed someone who understands the classic Sonic series and understands that gameplay format, in order to really execute well on the final product.” That’s where Naoto Ohshima comes in, as he’s the original creator of Sonic the Hedgehog and was with the series at the very beginning.

Iizuka said:

With the Future Redeemed DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 coming out several weeks ago, the main series’ original story has now truly wrapped up. We won’t get into any spoilers, but the first game set certain events in motion that has ties to the other entries. This has all been a big journey for the fans, especially for those that started out with the initial Wii release over a decade ago.

Now that the series has wrapped up for now – but count on more Xenoblade games in the future – we want to hear from you as far as how you’d rank the different games. Which is your favorite? What are your thoughts on the story DLC expansions? We also don’t want to leave Xenoblade Chronicles X fans out of the mix, so feel free to share your thoughts on that RPG as well if you played it.

Sonic Superstars preview

It feels like there’s a lot riding on Sonic Superstars. While it’s (only?) been six years since the highly acclaimed Sonic Mania brought the franchise back to its roots, that game was developed by a team of indie developers; it’s been far longer since Sonic Team itself has attempted to bring the blue blur back to the side-scrolling realm [update: Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka is involved, but has since confirmed Arzest is leading development]. After recently playing a demo of Sonic Superstars at Summer Game Fest Play Days, I’m optimistic the game will manage to recapture a lot of what people love about old-school Sonic, while leaving the door open for some exciting new mechanics to shine.
