Wii U

Nintendo today reported financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013. After reporting a net loss in its previous fiscal year, Nintendo was able to return to profitability in both Net and Ordinary Income for the full year, although Operating Income remained negative.

Based on the strong lineup of upcoming software titles for both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, Nintendo expects to return to Operating Income profitability by the end of the current fiscal year. During the next several months, Nintendo expects to launch new titles in the Mario Kart (Wii U), Super Mario Bros. (Wii U), Wii Fit (Wii U),Pikmin (Wii U), The Legend of Zelda (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS), Mario & Luigi (Nintendo 3DS) and Pokémon (Nintendo 3DS) franchises. These games, along with titles from Nintendo’s third-party publishing partners, will help drive hardware momentum and introduce new audiences to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms.

“One of the things that held it back is despite all of the changes that have happened over the years, it’s still one of the more complex and difficult games to play. Even though we do have core fans who are like, ‘Oh, I want to have more of this experience’, when you play any other game that has stealth elements, they’re all a lot more forgiving than Splinter Cell.”

“After shipping Conviction, there were a lot of people who said the fans didn’t like Mark and Execute. But when we looked at our broader feedback – we do surveys through Uplay and get thousands and thousands of players – the people who rated those new features the highest were actually players who played at least two games in the series before. So in fact it was the opposite of what the data was telling us.”

– Ubisoft Toronto boss Jade Raymond

You can read the rest of a really interesting interview here. It basically says that– while some players see the series as being “dumbed down”– Ubisoft will be going for a game that you can play stealthily or action-y, depending on what you enjoy. It’s a way to expand the audience without sacrificing the core gameplay that hardcore players like in Splinter Cell, but chances are we’ll be looking at more of an action-stealth game than a purely stealth game. Think the Resident Evil 4/5 change vs. Resident Evil GCN‘s “hardcore horror” vibe.

NetherRealm Studios has become known for its work on Mortal Kombat over the past few years, but the studio just shipped a brand new fighter: Injustice: Gods Among Us. Could the newly-released title turn into its own franchise? With any luck, director Ed Boon hopes it’ll happen.

Boon told GameZone:

“We are keeping our fingers crossed. You know, we would love to do other versions of… [he gets cut off] Yes, that would be a great thing.”

Would you like to see additional Injustice-related games?

The first two Batman: Arkham games have been single-player-focused affairs. Warner Bros. Montreal will apparently be mixing things up for the third entry, Batman: Arkham Origins, with at least one multiplayer mode.

Kotaku reports that “during at least one section of multiplayer, you play as a member of Joker or Bane’s gang while trying to take down Batman and Robin.” Possible playable and customizable villains include Killer Croc, Deadshot, Firefly, Black Mask, Deathstroke, and “some kind of Electroman character”, the site’s source says.

One of Kotaku’s sources has allegedly confirmed that Origins will indeed feature multiplayer, but wasn’t able to confirm specifics.

Nintendo hasn’t talked about them much specifically, but yes, Pikmin 3 will include white and purple Pikmin.

Both types made their debuts in Pikmin 2 and were discovered by Olimar underground. Purple Pikmin are heavier than other Pikmin and can execute stronger attacks. White Pikmin, meanwhile, can damage enemies with poision when eaten. They themselves are immune to poison and are very fast.

Two big Wii U items are due this week: the first of two major updates, and the Virtual Console.

The update was initially expected yesterday followed by the VC service today, but we know that isn’t the case. So when are both coming?

According to Emily Rogers, who has proven to be mostly reliable thus far, the firmware update will be available on Thursday. The Virtual Console will come on Friday, one day later.

And here’s one additional element thrown into the mix: Miiverse will apparently launch for mobile and PC platforms sometime this week. You may be able to access the social network through your browser here.

We’ll keep you updated on any additional developments…
