Initially, fans didn’t react favorably to Dragon Quest X. The series wasn’t expected to head down the MMORPG path, especially on Wii. Leave it to Square Enix to surprise people!

Sales of Dragon Quest X have not met expectations thus far. Square Enix has confirmed, however, that they are making “steadily progress”.

An MSN report reads:

“The slump is reportedly down to the company’s new online RPG venture, Dragon Quest X. While the disappointing financial turn for the company can be partially attributed to the burden of running the new online service, it is also down to game sales not meeting expectations. The Wii (and soon to be Wii U) game is however, making ‘steady progress’ according to Square Enix.

For the most part, it has been known (or at least assumed) that TimeGate Studios was lending a hand to Aliens: Colonial Marines’ development. The studio’s involvement appears to have been deeper than initially expected, however.

An unconfirmed forum post from a Gearbox staffer, posted last year, states that TimeGate actually handled a majority of Aliens’ creation. Gearbox was mainly relegated to the title’s multiplayer component.

The message says:

Hate to say it, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high for Colonial Marines. I used to work at Gearbox, and the development of that game has been a total train wreck, going on what, 6 years now? Gearbox isn’t even making the game, except for the multiplayer. Primary development was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, which has a less than stellar past.

I hope it proves me wrong, as I still have alot of friends still working at Gearbox, but I am expecting it to be average at best.

Aliens: Colonial Marines hasn’t exactly received the best reception thus far. If this information is true, it would have been interesting to see how the shooter would have turned out had Gearbox been the game’s sole developer.

Getting the combat right in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate wasn’t so easy. Developer MercurySteam struggled a bit to replicate the console’s combat on the 3DS.

According to producer David Cox, the team looked at 2D fighters such as Street Fighter and Samurai Shodown for inspiration. MercurySteam also “tried extensive play testing in order to just get the feel right.”

Cox told Siliconera:

“The combat was something we really struggled to get right, the feeling of power and the fluidity was particularly difficult to replicate. We looked at 2D fighting games like Street Fighter and Samurai Shodown, and we tried extensive play testing in order to just get the feel right. The combat has a 2D fighting game quality to it and we have kept the strategic element that people really liked, where you mix up your magic abilities and combine them with the sub weapons. This is a game you have to think about enemies and a game where you need to learn the moves and use the tools we give you. Otherwise you are going to die a lot! Its definitely not a button masher and studying the bestiary and your travel book will pay dividends later on.”

Capcom is continuing to highlight some of the different elements from Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. The latest update kicks off a look at different weapons in the game.

Dual Blades screenshots and details are posted below, straight from Capcom-Unity.

Homebrew modder “Smealum” has done something amazing with the DS. Although not close to completion or even playable, a running adaption of Portal is running on the system. Work on the project has been taking place for the past six months or so.

Smealum notes of the video:

“This is still extremely early footage so please don’t be too harsh. Lots of debug features are present, including the ability to fly, see portals through walls and move cubes from a distance. Also, keep in mind this was shot in an emulator which provides good but still less than perfect rendering. As such, be aware that most (not all, but still) of the graphical glitches you can see in this video don’t happen on hardware (mostly the portal transition is a lot nicer on an actual DS).”

3DS retail games tend to take up a lot of space. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is no different.

Those who plan on purchasing Mirror of Fate through the 3DS eShop should be aware that it will take up nearly 12,000 blocks on an SD card – 11,651 blocks specifically.

You’ll be able to get your hands on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate – through the eShop or at retail – on March 5.
