Reports began to surface today that Super Mario Maker 2 won’t let you play with friends online. Some thought that this could have just been a miscommunication, but that apparently isn’t so. GameXplain followed up with Nintendo and reconfirmed that you can only play online with random people.
Nintendo said in a statement:
Killer Queen Black will be sold physically on Switch, Liquid Bit and BumbleBear Games have revealed. Nighthawk Interactive will distribute the strategic eight-player arcade action platformer at retail, which was first announced for Switch at last year’s E3. A themed controller skin will be included in the package.

Nintendo previously made it clear that Super Mario Maker 2 will support multiplayer through online play in competitive and co-op gameplay. You can also play with friends nearby with multiple Switch systems.
After members of the media went hands-on with the game, we’ve learned about another multiplayer aspect in Super Mario Maker 2. Couch co-op is supported, meaning you’ll be able to play through levels with multiple people on one Switch. This should support up to four players.
