EDGE

EDGE recent put out a special issue featuring the 100 great video games of all time. The list is below, though the full magazine can be ordered here.

This is how EDGE says it determined its list:

“In compiling the list, we worked to simple criteria: all formats – console, PC, portable, coin-op, touchscreen – were eligible; we could include only a single entry from any series that features straight-up sequels; and each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance.”

And here’s the full lineup:

100 – WarioWare Inc – GBA
99 – Spec Ops: The Line
98 – Papers, Please
97 – DriveClub
96 – Braid
95 – Super Hexagon
94 – Her Story
93 – Super Monkey Ball
92 – Final Fantasy XII
91 – Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
90 – Katamari Damacy
89 – Animal Crossing: New Leaf
88 – Resogun
87 – Puzzle Bobble
86 – F-Zero GX

EDGE brought us a whole bunch of information about Splatoon in its latest issue. One topic covered by the magazine was the game’s development, and Shigeru Miyamoto’s thoughts on its early days.

Co-director Tsubasa Sakaguchi, producer Hisashi Nogami, and director Yusuke Amano spoke with EDGE about how Miyamoto wasn’t originally pleased with what the team had come up with Splatoon. Here’s what the three developers shared:

[After] the prototype phase, we had all these ideas about the height, the ink, the characters, and the image of the character and the squid. But we couldn’t kind of filter it down to a final result that would result in a simple, fun game. And during this period, we were being scolded by Mr Miyamoto all the time.

He was saying, ‘I don’t understand. What do you want to do? There’s no appeal to this game.’

We had the basics and then we were like, ‘Let’s add the hiding [in ink] feature; let’s add jumping; we need height, because it’s a 3D map.’ And then we thought, ‘We need to be able to shoot up and down.’ And we realised we’d added all this stuff, and we got confused. We didn’t know what the game was about.

Splatoon launches for Wii U on May 29.

This month’s EDGE review scores are as follows:

Dark Souls II – 9
Thief – 7
Yoshi’s New Island – 4
Earth Defense Force 2025 – 5
Strike Vector – 7
Strider – 7
TxK – 9

About the Yoshi’s New Island review: EDGE criticized a whole lot in its article – the lack of new ideas, the controls, level design, 3D implementation, and music.

EDGE finished its review with the following:

No one part of Yoshi’s New Island is ruinous by itself, but the sum is so much less than the 20-year-old parts from which it’s cobbled together. No one deserves to be duped by the Crayola box art into expecting a true sequel t oa childhood-gulping adventure, which is still counted among the most innovative 16bit games of the mid-’90s. Arzest has laid an egg here, but not of the golden variety.
