GDC 2018

GDC has published the full Sonic the Hedgehog presentation hosted last month, which we have below. During the session, Naoto Ohshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara spoke about their perspectives on the creation of franchise including detailed recollections of the game’s original design process and art direction.

Back at GDC, Kosuke Yabuki and Hisashi Nogami delivered presentations on their Switch games. The two were the producers of ARMS and Splatoon 2 respectively.

The award season is just about wrapping up, but one of the last few major events was hosted tonight. Winners for the 2018 Game Developers Choice Awards were revealed during a ceremony at the San Francisco Moscone Center.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the big winner, taking home three awards in total. The title was also chosen as “Game of the Year”.

Splatoon 2

Splatoon producer Hisashi Nogami just wrapped up his panel at GDC 2018. Aside from showing some very interesting development images, Nogami also spoke about user trends, development, and more.

At GDC today, Splatoon and Splatoon 2 producer Hisashi Nogami is hosting a special panel. The talk was highlighted by showing prototypes for the first game.

When Nintendo was first developing Splatoon, we heard in an Iwata Asks interview series that the team messed around with various concepts and ideas like tofu and rabbits. We now have new images and details about what took place during development.

Two prominent Switch games from 2017 will be receiving spotlights at this year’s Game Developers Conference. Event organizers announced today that Splatoon 2 and ARMS will have their own sessions hosted by Hisashi Nogami and Kosuke Yabuki respectively.

During the session for “Splatoon and Splatoon 2: How to Invent a Stylish Franchise with Global Appeal” Nogami “will share his experiences working with a design team whose goal was to create a game that was novel, yet easy to grasp and riveting to play.”

The nominees are in for the 2018 Game Developers Choice Awards. This will be the 18th time that awards will be handed out by the organization.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild leads the way with six nominations. Super Mario Odyssey also has a couple of nominations. Both are up for Game of the Year.

This year’s Game Developers Conference has come and gone, but next year’s event is already in sight. GDC 2018 will be back at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on March 19 to March 23.

26,000 attendees were present at GDC 2017. That’s down just slightly from 27,000 the previous year. GDC 2017 had 500 lectures, panels, tutorials and roundtable discussions, along with 570 companies in the expo hall.
