We’re only hours away from Nintendo’s E3 showing so this is no doubt the first of a few screenshots we’ll see from Sakurai and team this week. Today’s screenshots discuss a unique stage exclusive to the 3DS version:
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a game where you collect tons of coins. Thus, it’s only natural that many coins will appear in this stage… Wait, is this really Super Smash Bros??
Apparently when you collect enough coins:
If you collect 100 coins, you transform into a gold fighter! For a short period of time, your attack power will increase and you won’t flinch when you receive attacks. This unique stage’s name is Golden Plains and it’s exclusive to the 3DS version.

It’s E3 week but that’s not stopping the daily screenshots! Today’s is Pokemon themed again as Sakurai loops some previous announcements back around:
Remember the video that introduced Greninja joining the battle? Every Pokémon that appeared in that video will make some kind of appearance in Super Smash Bros! By the way, here’s one of the Pokémon that didn’t make an appearance in that video–Meloetta. Its vocal attacks reflect off land forms, so they’ll be especially effective in a closed environment.

Looking at a new item today, Sakurai explains the new Boomerang item as recently seen in Mario Kart 8:
Here’s a new item that we’ve thrown in–the boomerang. As you’d guess, it’ll fly back into your hands after you throw it, and if you keep catching it, its attack power grows with each throw! However, opponents can nab the boomerang out of the air, so it might be an easier item to use in Smash Run.

Along with today’s screenshot, Sakurai passed along the following message on Miiverse:
Some stages have been shrunk down and made into trophies, like this one of Tortimer Island for the 3DS version. I wish I could have a figurine like this in real life.

It’s a Mario double today and Sakurai gave us a look at a New Super Mario Bros. cameo:
Here’s a new Wii U stage, Mushroom Kingdom U! It brings to life the worlds of New Super Mario Bros. U.
The stage will be a transforming one and apparently we’ll see more of it in a couple of weeks:
When Kamek casts a spell, the stage transforms drastically! That said, this is not what you would call a moving stage… …By the way, this stage will be playable in the demo version of the game for E3, a game expo that starts on June 10 in Los Angeles.
The folks over at Cubed3 also have a couple more shots on there Instagram, which you can check out here and here

Our first look at Ike since his reveal! Sakurai explains how his Eruption attack will work:
You can charge up Ike’s Eruption attack by holding the button down, but remember to release it right before it fully charges to avoid recoil damage. Let go of the button at the moment the sword shines!

Today’s screenshot touches on another minor detail, this time pertaining to how the amount of damage taken affects character models. Previously as percentage got higher on a character in the Smash Bros. series, their models don’t change but as Sakurai explains:
Characters that have heavy damage slowly start to emit steam. When your opponent starts to get nice and smoky, give ’em a solid attack!

Today’s showcased item is the rocket belt from Pilotwings and features a cameo from the Streetpass Quest II boss! Sakurai had this to say:
The rocket belt from Pilotwings lets you fly upward by jumping. This is a really useful item for characters that have weaker recoveries. By the way, is that cape fireproof?

Today’s screenshot shares an interesting little tidbit about one of the mainstay Super Smash Bros. assets – the revival platforms. Sakurai explains the upgrade:
Here’s a look at the revival platforms. The color of the bottom mechanism changes from yellow to red to warn you how much time you have left before you drop into the fray.
