Disney Illusion Island review

System: Switch
Release date: July 28, 2023
Developer: Dlala Studios
Publisher: Disney Electronic Content

Mickey, Minnie, Donald & Goofy may be some of the most recognizable characters of all time, but it’s been a hot minute since they featured in a noteworthy game of their own – something true of many Disney franchises since the shuttering of Disney Interactive in 2016. As such, Disney Illusion Island is something of an experiment; an attempt to craft a modern, original Mickey Mouse story in a new world with new characters, with the structure of a Metroidvania (or “Mickeyvania,” as the developers have put it). While a lack of meaningful surprises can cause the experience to drag and feel overly simple, the game’s charming humor and silky-smooth platforming result in a fun and amusing adventure.

Super Smash Bros. future Masahiro Sakurai

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has shared his thoughts in the future of the series, including his involvement.

In a new video published to YouTube today, he mentioned that he “can’t really imagine a Smash Bros. title without me.” Sakurai added that, currently, there isn’t someone that could “take the reigns” from him.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is in development and will launch on Switch, publisher GameMill Entertainment has revealed along with developers Ludosity and Fair Play Labs (via IGN). A release is planned for 2023.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 retains the essence of the original while expanding on content. There’ll be more characters (Jimmy Neutron is being hyped up so far), more stages, and more modes, a new campaign, cross-play support for all platforms, voice acting for every playable character, new mini-games, improved graphics, and more.

Pikmin 4

The latest Japanese hardware sales from Famitsu are as follows:

Zelda Oracle of Ages Seasons Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online just added a pair of Zelda classics to its service, as Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons have dropped. Both are immediately available now via the official Game Boy app.

Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons were previously announced for Nintendo Switch Online back in February. However, a release date wasn’t provided at the time.

Sonic Mania 2

With the success of the original game, some were surprised by the fact that we never ended up seeing Sonic Mania 2. It turns out there was actually some initial interest on SEGA’s part, but things ultimately weren’t meant to be.

Classic Sonic is now going in a new direction with the previously-revealed Sonic Superstars. Arzest is taking the lead with Naoto Ohshima (who worked on the series’ original games) on board for the project, but the Sonic Mania team isn’t involved.

LEGO 2K Drive Creators Hub

2K and the LEGO Group just announced a major Creators Hub update for LEGO 2K Drive. Once installed, players will be able to share their vehicle designs with the world and browse / download creations from others.

The Creators Hub menu first puts players in the Depot, “where the hottest vehicles on the block are showcased.” There they can check out the Most Upvoted and Most Downloaded creations from the community.

Here’s a rundown of different features:

Splatoon 3 update 4.1.0

Nintendo has announced another big update for Splatoon 3, with the game expected to move up to version 4.1.0. Per usual, we have the patch notes as well.

Once again, many adjustments are planned for weapons, sub weapons, and special weapons. Another slew of bug fixes are coming as well.

Note that players can look forward to the next update at the end of the current season, with Nintendo largely focusing on more weapon balance adjustments and adding features for the new season beginning in September.

System: Switch
Release date: July 20, 2023
Developer: RideOn Japan
Publisher: Kemco

The age old war between cats and dogs has never been more illustrated than what you see in Cross Tails. Two kingdoms at odds with one another in a deep-rooted hatred fueled by generations of animosity, the game’s narrative opens with the canine Kingdom of Ranverfurt and the feline Republic of Hidiq currently embroiled in a decade-long battle. With a third faction trying to drive things in their own direction, will we be able to solve the conflict and steer destiny in a peaceful direction, or will the people continue to suffer due to the interference?
