At the end of last week, Japanese outlets were able to go hands-on with Mario Kart Arcade GP VR. New details about the game were shared as a result.

We have the following information:

– Four players get to race as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Peach
– Bowser and Wario also appear as NPCs
– People play by wearing not only VR googles and headphones, but also Vive trackers on each hand
– The right hand controls the accel, and the left hand has the brake
– The course is using the one from Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix
– The handle has force feedback, and the seat also rumbles
– Three items are available here: Banana, Hammer, and Green Shell
– Items are floating on balloons mid-way, and can be obtained by raising your hands to grab them
– You can also throw items towards opponents behind you
– Can now throw items in all sorts of directions
– Tracks also have gimmicks like a giant Piranha Plant showing up from the side, a Thwomp falling from above, and a Bob-omb trying to cross the road and will explode if crashed into
– The track will change from a flooded area to a red hot area that resembles Bowser’s Castle
– When you’re inside tunnels it’ll also have a steampunk feel
– There’s also a section where racers can glide mid-air
– Races are balanced so that nobody gets to greatly surpass others
– Finally, there are no time records or rank placements at the end of the game (the writer assumes it’s because they want players to have fun rather than honing their skills)

We also have some new images as well:

Mario Kart Arcade GP VR is playable right now in Japan. It just opened up at the VR Zone Shinjuku.

Jason Michael Paul, with his company Jason Michael Paul Productions, has been running the Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses concert for years. Paul does have interest in branching out into other areas of Nintendo music, though the decision ultimately lies with the big N itself.

In an interview with Vooks, Paul mentioned that he’d like to work on a “Nintendo All Star concert”. Apparently he’s even “presented these ideas for years and years.” The premise is what you’d expect – a whole concert of music from Nintendo franchises in a single concert.

Paul said:

“(laughs) Of course, it’s all on Nintendo! I’ve already presented these ideas for years and years. Now so hopefully I’ll get my shot to be able to do that and hopefully I’ve done the Legend of Zelda franchise justice enough to be to be handed the torch to be able to do that because the idea of creating a Nintendo All Star concert is definitely something I would love to do. It would basically be all of Nintendo’s IP being presented all in one concert, it would be phenomenal.”

Quality of Life is an initiative originally led by late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. We first heard about plans to create a product involving sleep and fatigue at the start of 2014. Since then, nothing has really materialized.

Despite the lack of news over the years, Nintendo once again says that Quality of Life is being pursued. Here’s an excerpt from the company’s annual report:

Moreover, we are working on the development of a new product that improves people’s QOL (Quality of Life) in enjoyable ways. Our aim is to enable consumers to make daily efforts to improve their QOL in a fun manner by
making sleep and fatigue status visible and offering various services based on this information.

Nintendo has published its annual report for the fiscal year that ended March 31st, 2017 in English online. You can read it here. It doesn’t really contain anything newsworthy that wasn’t shared at Nintendo’s 77th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders,  but if you want to read up on the structure of the company or its finances, it’s an interesting read.
