Nintendo Power will be shutting down, according to a new Ars Technica report. Future Publishing apparently told those involved about the move last week. Editors and other staff will be moved to other properties including GamesRadar and MacLife magazine.

An Ars Technica source claims that Nintendo was always “difficult to work with” and hasn’t shown much interest in taking the reigns of the magazine once again. Future began to publish Nintendo Power in 2007 after a contract was settled on.

The site also says that Nintendo was “uninterested in renewing that contract or in taking part in a number of digital initiatives that Future saw as necessary for the long-term health of the brand.”

How many issues will be released? That isn’t known. Similarly, it hasn’t been said how current subscribers will be compensated.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has fielded a number of questions relating to handheld gaming – competition in particular. Head past the break for his comments on what it would take for his company to stop making dedicated gaming handhelds, the threat of smartphones, how the two platforms differ, and more.

Retail games still have a strong presence in the industry, but selling titles digitally has become increasingly popular.

Now that there is such a focus on digital downloads, EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund believes retail releases could be on the way out.

When asked if he believes EA will still be selling physical content at retailers in ten years, Soderlund said:

“I don’t know, it’s a hard question. We know that packaged goods work, and the majority of our current revenue comes from that. That’s still a viable business model. In the long term, we’ll see more and more people gravitate to downloaded content. I happen to think that there’s something about physical content, like books, that’s collectable and satisfying to own. I still want physical content but I’m not part of the new generation of gamers. I remember a time when I bought a cartridge and excitedly read the manual on my way home, imagining what the game was going to be like. Maybe kids don’t have that anymore.”

Soderlund added:

“I think it’s going to be sooner than people think. I think it’s going to be sooner than ten years. That’s my personal opinion, and might not be what EA thinks.”

“Some good news: Fractured Soul has been approved by Nintendo today. We still don’t have a solid release date yet, but it couldn’t take too long for us to be given one… could it??”
