Bravely Default

Nintendo is doing something a bit new with the release of Bravely Default in North America. Game owners will find that the packaging comes with an “Also Plays on 2DS” sticker. If nothing else, it should prevent any potential confusion for the more mainstream consumer that the game can be played on both a 3DS and 2DS.

There’s still time to pre-order the Bravely Default Collector’s Edition if you haven’t already done so. It’s no longer available on Amazon, but Best Buy and GameStop are still taking reservations.

Bravely Second is still a long ways off, but producer Tomoya Asano and designer Akihiko Yoshida have been regularly talking with Japanese outlets about the upcoming 3DS game.

In a new interview with Famitsu, Yoshida said that the game will include enhanced graphics compared to Bravely Default. He said:

Basically the [battle] system does not change but the graphics are better than in the previous game. It’s possible to fill a dense background with thicker lines and strike a balance between the two. In the previous game, we felt the resolution was too low when zooming in. But this time, the denser background and camera zoom in does not affect quality, and unlike the previous game I don’t feel that [Bravely Second] falls apart when the camera is closer.

Bravely Default hit Japan back in 2012, but Square Enix decided to re-release the game with over 100 improvements. This new version is the same title that’s being made available in North America and Europe.

After greatly changing and enhancing the original game, producer Tomoya Asano believes that there’s “really no need for any more improvements.”

Asano said the following when asked if Bravely Default’s world map would be improved for the sequel:

“In terms of Bravely Default […] we worked specifically on making improvements to it for almost a year after it was released in Japan, so we feel that there is really no need for any more improvements. In my opinion, if there more things you ‘could’ do with the map, for example, it might make some players feel that there were more things they ‘must’ do with it.

“In Bravely Default, we tried to eliminate all elements besides those which we wanted our players to enjoy, to streamline the experience.”

We also have this… unexpected comment from Asano:

“If I were a pretty girl, I would want to dress up as the Valkyrie job type. Unfortunately, I will have to give up on that idea, since I’m a middle-aged man of 35!”

Nintendo has revealed some strong stats for the 3DS in 2013, highlighted by the platform’s sales that have surpassed 11.5 million units in the US.

The company also revealed today that over 16 million packaged and digital 3DS games were sold last year. That’s a rise of more than 45 percent compared to the 3DS’ game sales in 2012.

In other news, Nintendo has confirmed several release dates for upcoming titles. Yoshi’s New Island will release on March 14, followed by Disney Magical World (the Japanese title now heading west) on April 11.  Also remember Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, which launches on February 28.

You can find Nintendo’s full announcement below.

Square Enix continues to support the Japanese release of Bravely Default: For the Sequel with downloadable bosses.

Next up is “Leviathan”, who will be distributed between January 7 and January 9. Players are recommended to be at level 80 before facing him.

Lucifer will follow on January 10 and will be available until January 16. Before battling Lucifer, it’d be best to be at level 70 or higher.

While it’s nothing too major, Bravely Default’s overseas release has made a few small changes to the game’s female characters. Some costumes cover up the females a bit more – as you’ll notice in the image above. Additionally, Bravely Default ups the age of some characters.

Bravely Default/Bravely Second producer Tomoya Asano has previously mentioned that he hopes to create a new entry in the series each year. Annual releases don’t appear to be set in stone, however.

In an interview with 4Gamer, Asano mentioned how Bravely Default’s future relies upon the success of Bravely Second. This makes 2014 a particularly important year, Asano says.
