Last week, news leaked out through Sonic Mania’s Steam page that the game will be launching on August 15. SEGA has now followed up and made it official.

Here’s a new pre-order trailer:

Sonic Mania appears to have a final release date. The game now has an official page on Steam, which shows a release date of August 15. SEGA has not yet officially announced this date so the news may very well have been uncovered early.

Sonic Mania was originally planned for release in Spring 2017. SEGA ended up delaying the game to an unspecified period during the summer. With E3 right around the corner, we should be hearing about the new August 15 date soon.

SEGA’s Japanese division came out with a new video for Sonic Mania showing the Switch game in action. See the latest gameplay below.

It looks like SEGA is considering releasing a physical edition for Sonic Mania, according to SEGA Product Manager Jim Dyer. While it’s not confirmed yet, the positive feedback received at SXSW for the idea seems to have helped sway SEGA towards a physical release.

From an interview on Twinfinite.com, Dyer had this to say on the possibility of a physical version of Sonic Mania:

“We would love to do one. We want the community to know that we are listening, and at SXSW they suggested a lot of interest in us following through with a physical release. But we’re also aware that audience approves of anything Sonic related, so while we are listening and it is something we’d like to do, at this stage we are going to see how it goes.”

As Sonic Mania is releasing on the Switch as well, this would obviously mean that Switch owners would be able to get their hands on a physical release as well. Only time will tell at this point.

SEGA has followed up on news shared at its Sonic SXSW panel yesterday with a couple of new images for Sonic Mania.

First, shown above, is an official look at one of the new art pieces that debuted. It looks like a boxart image, but SEGA is simply calling it “key art”.

Below is an image teasing the Hard-Boiled Heavies bosses in Sonic Mania with a silhouette. Only one has been revealed thus far – that being Heavy Gunner.

SEGA shared a new reveal for Sonic Mania at the series’ SXSW panel just a few moments ago. The company gave a first look at Flying Battery Zone with a few seconds of footage. Originally, the area appeared in Sonic & Knuckles.

Here’s a video of it in action:

The original goal with Sonic Mania was to have the game out in Spring 2017. Unfortunately, the game is now seeing a bit of a delay.

Just announced at Sonic’s SXSW panel, Sonic Mania will now launch this summer. The extra time will be used to ensure that it’s of the highest quality.

This piece of new art also just debuted:

Sonic Mania is due out on Switch later this year. Fortunately, when it’s ready, there won’t be any compromises made to the actual release.

SEGA’s Aaron Webber told Nintendo World Report in an interview at PAX that Sonic Mania will be on Switch at the same time as other platforms. Furthermore, it will be the same price. With talk circulating about some third-party games costing more on Switch, this is certainly encouraging to hear.
