Nintendo Network ID

Nintendo Network

Back in April, Nintendo confirmed a breach involving Nintendo Network IDs. At the time, the company reported that 160,000 accounts had been illegally accessed. A follow-up report was provided today, and it seems more IDs were involved than original expected.

According to Nintendo, 140,000 additional accounts may have been hacked. That brings the overall total to 300,000, though the company says that less than 1 percent of these led to fraudulent purchases.

Miiverse

Miiverse has received another small update today. Two small changes have been first.

First, users will now be directed to the Communities screen when logging in to Miiverse on the web. Second, those without Nintendo Network IDs can now view all popular posts as well as comments on those posts.

Here’s the official update news from Miiverse’s Marty:

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– A system update for Nintendo 3DS is now available and brings with it new features that enable Nintendo Network ID functionality, as well as the ability to browse and post on Miiverse.

The update will allow users to register a Nintendo Network ID to their Nintendo 3DS system. If they also have a Wii U system, they can use the same Nintendo Network ID to combine their Nintendo eShop balances and Wish Lists. A Nintendo Network ID is required to download free content, like game demos, from the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.

3DS users should keep something in mind about the system’s upcoming firmware update. According to an official page on Nintendo of Europe’s site, owners will be unable to change regions and use multiple currencies after they’ve registered a Nintendo Network ID.

The official notice reads:

After registering a Nintendo Network ID, you will be unable to change regions and use multiple currencies – for instance, pounds and euros – in Nintendo eShop. The funds in the currency that corresponds to the country setting of your Nintendo Network ID will remain, and any funds in other currencies will be deleted and no longer usable. Please make sure to use up any other currencies before registering a Nintendo Network ID to your Nintendo 3DS system.
