Shadow Classic Sonic

Any hopes of Shadow appearing in the Classic Sonic the Hedgehog series have been dashed, at least for now.

Shadow is actually the favorite character of Sonic Team creative officer Takashi Iizuka. Unfortunately though, it seems he can only appear in the Modern series.

Sonic Superstars trip

Sonic Superstars is taking a different approach to the story, including with new enemy trip. The developers behind the game have now given insight into its creation.

Sonic Team creative officer Takashi Iizuka told Game Informer that the team “wanted to have a new story,” which required a new character. It was also important to have an enemy “with some kind of unique characteristics, some character backgrounds, some storytelling elements that are going to make the character unique and stand out and be a character that people can kind of relate to and empathize with and enjoy as a character in the world”.

Iizuka said:

Original: A new article from Game Informer has outlined all of the Emerald Powers in Sonic Superstars. Each one provides something unique, though of course there’s something special for collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds as well.

Here’s the full rundown:

Sonic Mania 2

With the success of the original game, some were surprised by the fact that we never ended up seeing Sonic Mania 2. It turns out there was actually some initial interest on SEGA’s part, but things ultimately weren’t meant to be.

Classic Sonic is now going in a new direction with the previously-revealed Sonic Superstars. Arzest is taking the lead with Naoto Ohshima (who worked on the series’ original games) on board for the project, but the Sonic Mania team isn’t involved.

Sonic Superstars opening

SEGA has just issued the official opening animation for Sonic Superstars. The game’s playable characters are highlighted, including Sonic the Hedgehog himself as well as Knuckles, Tails, and Amy.

For those that need a refresher on the game, we have the following overview:

Sonic the Hedgehog remakes reboots

SEGA president and COO Yukio Sugino has commented on the success of Sonic Frontiers as well as interest in approaches like remakes and reboots.

Sugino’s comments came as part of an interview published in a recent issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu. He was first asked about what was memorable last year, to which he pointed to the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie as well as Sonic Frontiers. The Switch title, which is also available on other platforms, “managed to sell more copies than we anticipated.”

Sugino said:

Sonic Chronicles 2

BioWare had ideas for Sonic Chronicles 2 back in the day, but the sequel never materialized. However, lead designer Miles Holmes has now shared details about what the studio had in mind for the story.

For those that never played Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood on DS, that game actually ended with a cliffhanger. The sequel would have picked up right where things left off with Eggman taking over the world, and BioWare had planned certain plot points that would leave the door open to even more games.
