Nintendo says it isn’t planning on announcing a new Switch model anytime soon

Rumors of an upgraded Switch model continue to persist, but a reveal doesn’t appear to be on the horizon. During a financial call for Nintendo’s latest financial results today, president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company isn’t planning on making an announcement anytime soon. Furukawa pointed to the upcoming Mario edition Switch and Monster Hunter bundle as something Nintendo is currently focusing on.
An announcement may not be imminent, but the door isn’t necessarily closed on 2021 entirely. Bloomberg reporter Takashi Mochizuki pointed out how Furukawa said last year that Nintendo wasn’t planning on a releasing a new model in 2020 whereas today’s statement simply said “anytime soon.”

Switch has sold amazingly well, and that success continued into Nintendo’s latest financial period. During the
most recent quarter, 11.57 million units were sold. Nintendo managed to do something that it never did with Wii, one of its best-selling consoles ever.
Interestingly enough, Switch sold more units last quarter than the Wii has ever achieved. The DS, another hugely popular system, only has two quarters with higher hardware shipments.
We’ll also mention that launch aligned, Switch has overtaken the Wii for the first time since the beginning of 2018 and is only behind the DS. Wii is expected to pull ahead after March, but Switch should will lead again afterwards.
