Nintendo and Phillips sign a Global Patent License Agreement

Earlier this year Dutch electronics company Phillips, filed a lawsuit against Nintendo for what they felt was a patent infringement related to their patent on “Virtual Body Control Device” as well as “User Interface System Based on Pointing Device.
Initially Phillips was asking for not only monetary compensation but also a ban on selling the Wii and Wii U.
Then in June in the UK High courts, Phillips won an early victory with Nintendo set to appeal.
Now today we learn that the two companies have now reached an agreement with Nintendo releasing this statement:
Nintendo today announced that it has entered into a global patent license agreement with Royal Philips (NYSE:PHG, AEX: PHIA). As part of the agreement, Nintendo and Philips will cross license portions of each company’s patent portfolio. This agreement ends patent invalidity proceedings brought against Philips by Nintendo in multiple countries, as well as patent infringement proceedings brought by Philips against Nintendo.
“We are pleased to have reached agreement with Philips, as it demonstrates that both companies recognize the importance of intellectual property rights,” said Martina Franke, European General Counsel of Nintendo of Europe. “Nintendo has a substantial IP portfolio and a long history of developing innovative products while respecting valid intellectual property rights of others.”
Financial details and other terms of the license agreement will not be disclosed.
Dirty Harry game was once planned for Wii and DS

The Collective, Inc. – in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive – was once working on Dirty Harry/Dirty Harry Extreme. What we didn’t know is that separate versions were planned for Nintendo systems several years ago.
Unseen64 reports that Sensory Sweep Studios was developing Dirty Harry for Wii, DS, PS2, and PC. While the Wii version was never put into full production, it would have been an “up-port” of the PS2 release with IR pointer aiming and motion control for melee attacks. The DS version was intended to be built from the ground up.

Suda51 says Nintendo was supportive of No More Heroes, would like to revisit the series
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News, Wii | 9 Comments
This month’s issue of EDGE contains a feature on No More Heroes. Of course, the article wouldn’t be complete without an interview with director Goichi Suda – otherwise known as Suda51.
Suda51 talked about a number of topics while speaking with EDGE. Some of his responses are more notable of others, such as him stating that Nintendo was supportive of the franchise despite its mature nature:
They were very supportive, especially Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe. In Japan and also in Europe, we released a lighter version, where the heads don’t fly like they do in the American version. The mature content was only in the American version.
Elsewhere in the interview, Suda51 mentioned that he’d eventually like to return to the No More Heroes series:
No More Heroes was a smash hit as far as we were concerned, and I wanted to return to it and to make it a series over which we would take great care. I often get asked to make a third game. Right now we’re busy with Let It Die, but Travis is a character we could even return to in ten years’ time. When the timing is right, I’d like to do so.

Sony: Wii “a shadow of its former self”, Vita better than 3DS and others as “best handheld gaming experience”
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in 3DS, General Nintendo, News, Wii, Wii U | 213 Comments
A couple of folks over at Sony shared some not-so-nice comments pertaining to Nintendo in recent interviews.
First, while speaking with Red Bull, Sony’s Fergal Gara said that the Wii “is a shadow of its former self.” Gara was reflecting on the future of the PlayStation 4 and appealing to a mass market.
Elsewhere in an interview with IGN, Sony Computer Entertainment America president/CEO Shawn Layden stated that he believes the PlayStation Vita offers the best portable gaming experience – even more so than what Nintendo is doing with 3DS.
“I believe that Vita is the best handheld gaming experience, full stop, period. Nothing comes close to that. You can talk about your mobile, you can talk about your tablet, you can talk about, you know, Nintendo platforms or what have you in the handheld space. I think, pound-for-pound, buck-for-buck, Vita is the best gaming experience you can have.”
