With the recent release of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and the 1st and 2nd wave of amiibo, I have started to reflect on how these little NFC “Figure Players” have added an entirely new dynamic to the series that we’ve never had during this franchise’s history. With the addition of the amiibo we’re given an array of new possibilities that add depth and scope to a game that already had quite a bit for a brawler, and even with other companies having already released similar types of “toy” peripherals we are seeing a whole new side to what the future might hold for video games.

NFC payment coming to Wii U in Japan from July 22

Popular smart card company Suica is partnering with Nintendo to allow for NFC payment on the GamePad in Japan. Suica are best known as rechargeable non-contact smart cards that can be used to pay fares when travelling on Japanese trains. These cards will work exactly as you would expect, allowing for the NFC capabilities on the device to load funds onto the system without the need to input any code like with traditional eShop cards. There will be a special promotional deal as well, adding 1 reward point for every 200 Yen spent to Suica’s reward program.
Rumor: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U to include NFC functionality
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in Rumors, Wii U | 11 Comments
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U might be incorporating NFC functionality, new comments from Nintendo France general director Stephan Bole suggest. Bole told Le Figaro in an interview, “The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.” While the interview is certainly trustworthy, we’ll need an official announcement before we can say this is confirmed.

We now have direct quotes from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata regarding the company’s NFP plans. You can find all of his comments below.
To establish new and growing areas through the active utilization of character IP, it is important for Nintendo to take risks ourselves and come up with interesting ways to use our character IP.
In other words, other than using character IP in Nintendo’s video game software, we need to start a new business that will someday become one of our core activities. As Nintendo’s first step
We have decided to release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality that are compatible with video games starting from this year-end sales season.

Iwata talks about Wii U NFC plans
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U | 1 Comment
During Nintendo’s investor briefing, president Satoru Iwata discussed what’s in store for the Wii U’s NFC feature. Check out Iwata’s remarks below.
In addition, the GamePad is the only video game platform with an NFC (near-field communication) reader/writer function. “Pokémon Rumble U” has already taken advantage of this function, but aside from this title, Wii U has failed to make use of the full potential of this function so far, despite it being a built-in feature.
This year, we will make full use of this function by preparing multiple proposals, including the implementation of NFC payments with JR East’s “Suica,” which we announced on a previous occasion. We will showcase our detailed propositions for utilizing the NFC functionality at E3 in Los Angeles in June.
