Pokemon Works

The Pokemon Company has established a new Pokemon Works subsidiary, and fans are speculating about what it could mean for the future.

At least at the moment, there’s not much to go on. Pokemon Works is only known to be operating in Shinjuku, and is in the same building as Ilca. Ilca, of course, is behind the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Switch remakes, which launched in 2021.

Talking Pokemon

As many fans know, Meowth is the primary Pokemon that talks like a person in the anime. However, there was actually a time when the same thing was considered for other creatures.

The Pokemon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara spoke about this in a recent interview of Famitsu while discussing Detective Pikachu Returns. Here’s what was shared about that subject which we’ve translated:

Original (2/27): At the Pokemon Presents event today, Netflix announced Pokemon Concierge. This is a brand new animated series.

Build-A-Bear Mudkip

Build-A-Bear revealed its latest Pokemon plushie today, and fans now have the opportunity to get their hands on one for Mudkip.

Mudkip is a Water-type Pokemon with a large head featuring orange gills and a blue fin on top. It first showed up in the series’ third games, Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire.

The Pokemon Company chief operations officer Takato Utsunomiya has again commented on Pokemon designs and Game Freak specifically.

Utsunomiya recently said in an interview that coming up with new ideas on that front “is an area that Game Freak really excels in.” Another aspect of creativity stems from the fact that younger staff are now becoming a part of the company and are “creating new Pokemon or coming up with new ideas for Pokemon”.

Pokemon younger generation fans

The Pokemon Company chief operations officer Takato Utsunomiya has weighed in on the pressure of keeping the younger generation interested in the franchise.

Part of the reason why Pokemon has been so successful is that kids that originally grew up with the games, anime, trading cards and more are now adults and remain fans today. Getting new fans on board helps maintain that popularity.

Build-A-Bear Mimikyu

Build-A-Bear continues to churn out new Pokemon plushies, and Mimikyu has been added to the collection. Consumers can initially grab it online with the in-store version to follow.

Mimikyu, a Ghost- and Fairy-type, hides under a cloth that resembles Pikachu. The creature first appeared in Pokemon Sun and Moon on 3DS.

Pokemon designs have been made across nine different generations and with over 1,000 creatures, but it sounds like there’s still plenty of room left in the tank when it comes to new ideas.

As part of a group interview at the 2023 Pokemon World Championships, The Pokemon Company COO Takato Utsunomiya was asked about challenges in coming up with new designs. This doesn’t appear to be an issue as new generations of developers will bring about their own ideas. Utsunomiya also doesn’t believe having a lot of Pokemon is a problem and mentioned: “we probably still have a long way we can keep going.”
