SpongeBob SquarePants Cosmic Shake review

System: Switch
Release date: January 31, 2023
Developer: Purple Lamp
Publisher: THQ Nordic

Of all the platforming juggernauts that come to mind when I recall the early 2000s, SpongeBob SquarePants is not among them. In 2020, THQ released a remake of Battle for Bikini Bottom – a 2003 game in every sense of the word. After selling over two million copies, it landed us with an all new spiritual sequel to that game in the form of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. The main hurdle this sequel has to overcome is being unshackled from the weapons-grade nostalgia that propelled its predecessor to success. To be fair to The Cosmic Shake, this is a difficult act to follow. How exactly do you craft a follow-up to a remake of a twenty year old game? Developer Purple Lamp has two decades of platformers to draw inspiration from, and the one it chooses to wear on its sleeve is unfortunately the remake that preceded it.

Risen gameplay

THQ Nordic dropped Risen on Switch this week, and we now have gameplay. As a reminder, this is the return of the 2009 action RPG.

SpongeBob SquarePants The Cosmic Shake interview Purple Lamp

Nintendo Everything recently had a chance to speak with Andreas “AJ” Jarzabek, a project manager at Purple Lamp, about SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. This title follows a remake of Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, a remake of the 2003 3D platformer.

We discussed a range of topics with Jarzabek, including the origins of Cosmic Shake, different gameplay aspects, the Switch version, and more. You can delve into our full interview below.

SpongeBob SquarePants Purple Lamp Studios

When you think of the bigger SpongeBob SquarePants games these days, Purple Lamp should come to mind. The studio worked on Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated in 2020, and is now about to release The Cosmic Shake just a couple of years later.

Despite having put out a pair of 3D platformers based on the franchise (though one was a remake) relatively close together, it sounds like the developer would like to continue working with the IP going forward. Andreas “AJ” Jarzabek, project manager, Purple Lamp Studios, told Nintendo Everything in a recent interview that it still has plenty of ideas left in the tank.

Remnant From the Ashes

Original (1/17): Remnant: From the Ashes is receiving a new Switch version, publisher THQ Nordic and developer Gunfire Games announced today. The two sides have yet to provide a release window.

Remnant: From the Ashes was thought to be releasing on Nintendo’s console after a rating for the title surfaced at the end of 2021. However, it was not officially confirmed until today.

Risen trailer

THQ Nordic published Risen on Switch today, and we now have a look at the game on Nintendo’s console via a new trailer. This marks the first time the title is appearing on a Nintendo system.

Here’s some information about the game:

SpongeBob SquarePants The Cosmic Shake Kids Explain

THQ Nordic talked to the experts – or kids – on SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake and asked for their verdict. This is what we see in the game’s latest trailer, which was just published. Some new footage is also included.

A brief overview of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake can be found in the following overview:

de Blob DS

YouTuber RebelTaxi has managed to secure an early build of de Blob DS, which was originally being made by Helixe. This version of the game was ultimately cancelled.

THQ ended up publishing one version of de Blob for Wii (which is on Switch by the way), and also had plans for another on DS. Blue Tongue Entertainment was in charge of the former. Helixe was planned to handle the DS version, but their work was ultimately scrapped entirely.

SpongeBob SquarePants Cosmic Shake Bikini Bottomites

THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp Studios today issued a new trailer for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, which gives us a closer look at the game’s cast. The video, dubbed “Meet the Bikini Bottomites”, shows off SpongeBob, Patrick, Gary, Sandy, and Squidward.

Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning Fatesworn delayed 2023

The Fatesworn expansion for Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning came out around this time on most platforms last year, but when we last heard about it for Switch, the new content was planned for 2022. However, there hasn’t been much in the way of news over the past few months. With only a few days left in the year, perhaps it’s unsurprising to state that the Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Fatesworn expansion has been delayed to 2023 on Switch.

That news comes from the official Twitter account. While it’s a bit of a disappointment, THQ Nordic did clarify that the expansion is “almsot done” for Nintendo’s console. We don’t have any sort of date, but it’s apparently coming soon – so an early 2023 launch isn’t out of the question.
