Shantae

WayForward will publish the original Shantae on Switch this month, the studio just announced. The title will launch digitally on April 22.

Shantae originally came to Game Boy Color back in 2002. It has become one of the more titles around since then.

Here’s an overview of the game, along with a trailer:

On social media today, WayForward shared new insight into the making of River City Girls. The developer showed off a scrapped boss for the game who goes by the name Noroi, which means curse in Japanese.

According to WayForward: “This kindhearted schoolboy would have been possessed by a malicious yokai that made him violent towards our heroines, but he never made it past the concept stage.” You can see a piece of concept art above.

River City Girls originally launched for Switch in September 2019.

The last time Bakugan saw any sort of video game outside of mobile devices was back in 2011 with Rise of the Resistance on DS. Almost nine years later, to the dot, the series is back with Champions of Vestroia. I don’t think Bakugan ever had that sort of grip or longevity something like Yu-Gi-Oh! or even Beyblade has, but it’s gathered enough of a following to warrant continued support of the property so many years later, especially now with the new Switch game. The anime continues on with Bakugan: Armored Aliance following a sort of “reboot” with Battle Planet prior to that, so Champions of Vestroia just adds to a big push from SEGA Toys and Spin Master for the series to return to the forefront where it once sat as Property of the Year in 2009.

Dawn of the Monsters

WayForward has announced that it has picked up Dawn of the Monsters for publishing. It’s being developed by 13AM Games, the studio behind Runbow. WayForward “will provide creative support and handle digital publishing, distribution, and marketing duties in North America and Europe.”

It’s also been confirmed that Dawn of the Monsters will release on Switch. The project is scheduled for a late 2021 launch.
