Nintendo Sound Clock Alarmo Hall effect sensor

iFixit recently posted a teardown of Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo, and while there aren’t massive discoveries, it has been found that the device makes use of a Hall effect sensor – which is rumored for Nintendo Switch 2.

With the sensor, iFixit mentions that this will help preserve the alarm clock in the long-term. This is more resistant to wear and tear, so it shouldn’t break as easily. Additionally, the sensor helps to improve accuracy while using the dial to navigate the alarm clock’s menus

Niantic Scopely

February 18: According to a report from Bloomberg, Niantic is gearing up for a sale of its video game business to Scopely. The outlets cites “several people familiar with the discussions.”

No official announcements have been made at this time. However, Bloomberg states that a price of $3.5 billion is currently being thrown around. An official announcement is expected in the weeks ahead.

SNES getting faster

New research has been conducted about the SNES, indicating that Nintendo’s classic console is actually getting faster as it ages.

Over on Bluesky, TASbot asked system owners to help with the data gathering process. Eligible users ran the smpspeed ROM test from lidnariq through flash carts. 143 users participated, and based on the results, SNES consoles are running faster in 2025 compared to the system’s original specifications. We’re able to see that the Audio Processing Unit (APU) runs faster than it did previously. This has the possibility of notes having the capability to be played at a higher pitch.

Mario movie 2 story

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is almost two years old already. When it first released in April 2023, it was received fairly well as far as video game movies go – and it became one of the most successful animated movies of all time. That said, one of its shortcomings was its story. It moved quite fast, separated Mario and Luigi at the start, and overall didn’t feature a ton of character depth or development. That’s fairly typical for the first movie in a series, though.

Indeed, we’ve received confirmation that there is a second movie “based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” in development. There’s no word on exactly what it will be. It’s probably safe to assume that it will simply be The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, but there’s a chance it could be based around Donkey Kong or possibly someone else. So today, we’re discussing some potential plot point ideas for the next Mario movie, which we may even see for Mario Day this year. In order to best predict potential storylines for the next movie, we do have to spoil many elements of the first film – so keep that in mind before you continue reading.

Nintendo Pokemon relationship

Former Nintendo of America staffers have shared some interesting behind-the-scenes information about what it was like working in collaboration with The Pokemon Company, with the relationship described as being “adversarial”.

Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang shared the details during a recent episode of their podcast. Yang brought up how there was a “tug of war for control”. Ellis also brought up about how The Pokemon Company hammered in on pronunciations and was particular about even the finest details of its creatures.

Metroid movie cancelled

Gail Tilden, former marketing manager at Nintendo of America, has spoken about the Metroid movie that never came to be.

It was around two decades ago that there were hopes of seeing Samus Aran on the big screen. The movie was planned to hit theaters in 2006, but that didn’t end up happening. Producer Brad Foxhoven would later reflect on what transpired, indicating that there were creative disagreements with Nintendo. The company was apparently hesitant after the 1993 Mario movie bombed and was unsure about allowing a different team to handle Samus’ origin story.

GoldenEye 007 was nominated previously, but was not selected. Harvest Moon is one of the new additions this time around.

Pokemon gritty baseball

Former Nintendo of America advertising manager Gail Tilden has revealed that there was at least some discussion about turning Pokemon into a gritty baseball RPG outside of Japan.

Well before the franchise became the mainstream success that it is today, Nintendo was grappling with how to localize things for the west. Feeling that it wouldn’t be easy to sell in the west, Tilden said that the company’s advertising agency suggested doing something different by essentially turning it into a gritty baseball game. Thankfully that didn’t come to be, and Nintendo ended up with a localization that was faithful to the original Japanese version.
