SteamWorld 2 is coming to Switch, Image & Form has announced.

Here’s what we know thus far:

– Platform mining adventure
– Past and the future meet in an old mining town
– Search for an old friend
– Team up with an unlikely companion

SteamWorld Dig 2 is coming to the Switch eShop this summer.

Image & Form posted the latest episode of The Engine Room today. The studio talked about – or rather teased – its plans for 2017, including the next SteamWorld game.

It would appear that the proper announcement of the new project isn’t too far off, as it will actually be shown at PAX East in March. SteamWorld Quest should be the name going off of what we heard a few months ago, though it’s not officially set in stone.

SteamWorld series developer Image & Form is one of a few indie studios with access to a Switch development kit. During the company’s latest episode of “The Engine Room”, there’s some talk about the new system. Image & Form talked about topics such as its power, whether it’s easy to develop for, and more.

SuperMetaldave64 posted a new video interview with Brjann Sigurgeirsson, CEO of Image & Form. Sigurgeirsson discussed the SteamWorld series, working with Wii U, and the Switch. Hear what he had to say in the video below.

Nintendo has said relatively little about what’s powering Switch. We know that NVIDIA is packing in a custom Tegra processor, but other than that, the big N has kept quiet. We only have rumors to go on such as the possibility of 4 GB of RAM being included.

At least one third-party developer appears to be pleased with what Nintendo is bringing to the table. Image & Form, developer of the SteamWorld series, told one fan on Twitter that Nintendo isn’t “skimping on power”. When asked further, the studio said that’s compared to previous home consoles.

With SteamWorld Heist having launched on Wii U yesterday, a new trailer has been uploaded to highlight the game’s strong critical reception. See it below.

Update: Here’s a video from Image & Form:

Original: SteamWorld Dig and SteamWorld Heist studio Image & Form has confirmed that the team is working on something for Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, specifics are being kept secret for now. CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson would only tell Nintendo Life that “it’s going to make a lot of people happy.” Also mentioned is that work began early in the year, and Sigurgeirsson teased: “It’s an idea we have had for quite a while and Switch will be the perfect platform for it.”

SteamWorld Heist nearly had multiplayer. That’s according to Image & Form community manager Julius Guldbog, who said in a Reddit AMA that the functionality was “seriously considered”. Time was the only reason why it wasn’t included in the end.

Guldbog stated:

“We would love multiplayer and seriously considered it for Heist. In the end we ran out of time, simply.”

As another aside, the SteamWorld Heist hat packs are still planned for 3DS. Image & Form “ran into a nasty bug that will take some time to fix since DLC on 3DS didn’t work the way we thought,” though the team will “definitely compensate 3DS owners for the long wait”.

The Wii U version of SteamWorld Heist is already out in Europe, including the physical version. As for North America, we’re still waiting on both.

We should be seeing SteamWorld Collection in the states on November 1. Nintendo’s website also lists an October 20 release date for SteamWorld Heist’s Wii U version in North America. That would be a Thursday, so it’s very plausible.

Stay tuned for official news from Image & Form.
