Level-5

With 2016 just a few days away, Japanese outlet 4Gamer caught up with a wide array of developers – 146 in total – to talk about the upcoming year. Here are some of the more Nintendo-related teases:

Capcom

Producer Masachika Kawata (Resident Evil Revelations): “First we’ll release Umbrella Corps for the shooter fans, but other than that, I think this year we may be able to make a number of interesting announcements. Please look forward to them.”

Director Shu Takumi (Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick, The Great Ace Attorney): Currently, for next year, I’m preparing my next project, and am working in parallel on supervising the screenplay for the Ace Attorney anime that will begin in April.”

Square Enix

Chief Planner Takashi Anzai: “It’s Dragon Quest‘s 30th anniversary! We have a number of projects, so please look forward to it.”

Spike Chunsoft

Director Kotaro Uchikoshi (Punch Line, Zero Time Dilemma): “In 2016, we’ll release the game version of Punch Line and the sequel to a certain title. The former is a complete game, and has an even deeper scenario than the anime dense in content. I think I’ll be able to share more information about the latter early in the year, so please look forward to it.”

Level-5

President Akihiro Hino (Yo-kai Watch, Ni no Kuni, etc.): “Level-5 is always thinking of and proposing new things to the world. I can’t let out the details yet, but in 2016 too we have all new ideas and various new titles to announce. Among them, there is also a sequel to a very popular series.”

Yo-kai Sangokushi is the latest Yo-kai Watch game, and it’s another spin-off / crossover title. Announced earlier this year, Level-5 revealed today that the crossover between Yo-kai Watch and Romance of the Three Kingdoms will be released for Nintendo 3DS in Japan in 2016.

All copies of the game will come with “Komasan Sun Ce” Military Commander Legendary Medal, while first-print copies will also include a “Komasan Sun Ce” figure strap.

Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version recently made its way to Japan. Plenty of gameplay can be seen below.

Yo-kai Watch Busters’ new Moon Rabbit Team update is live in Japan. As such, Level-5 is celebrating with a new trailer. You can view it below.

During last month’s Nintendo Direct, a short promo aired for Yo-kai Watch involving Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime and Bill Trinen. The third part of that has now been made available. Give it a look below.

Less than two weeks before the debut of Yo-kai Watch: Enma Daioh to Itsutsu no Monogatari da Nyan! TV announcer Sayaka Suguru announced that a third film is on the way for Winter 2016. The announcement was made during a special event for the second film and unfortunately did not include any details about the movie.

Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino is aware that making Yo-kai Watch a success in the west will be challenging. In an interview with Technobubble, he said:

“We’re working in a market packed with both Pokémon and all kinds of other attractive content, so for a new entry like ours, it was going to be challenging no matter what.”

One reason behind the tough localization process is due to the “yokai” term being inherently Japanese. In other territories, there isn’t a quick and direct equivalent.

As Hino said:

“To Japanese people, yokai aren’t monsters precisely — they’re a more special kind of thing. In the past, we used the term to refer to the personified souls of people, animals, or things that made contact with and grew attached to people.”

Level-5 has just announced that their popular RPG series, Yokai Watch, has surpassed 10 million units sold worldwide.

The number includes all Yokai Watch related titles, including Busters, Yo-Kai Watch 1 and 2 in Japan as well as the original’s release in the west. This is a huge milestone for the Japanese hit, and we hope to see more success from it in the future.

In Japan, expect to see the Yo-Kai Watch edition of Just Dance releasing on December 5th which comes with a whopping ten songs, with its second animated movie coming out on December 19th, followed by the third installment in the main series coming to 3DS in summer of 2016.
