CEDEC 2018 kicked off today, and it started with a big. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto opened the developer conference with a keynote.

During his speech, Miyamoto suggested that developers look back their own experiences in order to create globally-accepted games. This is in contrast to pursuing what’s trending in the industry.

Mario Tennis Aces

Two Switch games debuted at retail in Japan during the week of June 18. One of these was Mario Tennis Aces, which sold over 120,000 copies in its first week.

Dengeki provides further insight into the game’s performance. It managed to sell through quite a bit of its first shipment, coming in at 75%.

Minecraft

The new version of Minecraft is now available on Switch. You can find it on the eShop, though it’s getting a physical release as well. It’s a 658MB download.

If you previously purchased Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, this version will show 100% free on the eShop. The old edition is also being removed from the store.

Thanks to Luis_deleonn for the tip.

The Nintendo UK store has opened pre-orders for the new, physical version of Minecraft. You can reserve it here.

What you’ll be buying is the Bedrock version, which contains all previously released content, including the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and all DLC. Players will be able to connect with friends on non-Nintendo systems via cross-platform play.

Mojang is starting to roll out the Update Aquatic for Minecraft. It’ll be going live on Switch when it’s updated to the Bedrock version on June 21, with the Wii U version to follow.

The Update Aquatic will be delivered in two phases, each with different features. Phase One contains the following:

A new update is due out very soon for Minecraft on both Switch and Wii U. The patch will implement a number of fixes, but also adds the Moana Character Pack and Skin Pack 1.

Maintenance will be taking place for Minecraft later today. The patch should be going live during the early part of that period.

For the full patch notes of today’s update, continue on below.

Mr. Squishy has managed to fully recreate the Pokemon Red experience in Minecraft. After working on the project for 21 months, he shared the fruits of his labor on Reddit this past weekend. We posted about something similar last year with FireRed, though this one is entirely finished.

357,000 command blocks were used here. It contains “all of the original game’s features, along with a few iconic bugs.” Since the project done manually, Mr. Squishy walked the equivalent of 2,832.89 kilometers in-game.

Minecraft fans can play Pokemon Red in the game through a realistic Game Boy. It’s even possible to customize the color of the shell.

The download link for the relevant files is located here. Keep in mind that you’ll need to roll back Minecraft a few versions in order for it to work.

There’s one additional excerpt from Glixel’s new interview with Shigeru Miyamoto that we wanted to give the spotlight to.

As part of the discussion, Miyamoto was asked if he’s playing games other than the mobile title Neko Atsume. This led him to speak about his enjoyment and respect of Minecraft.

Interestingly, Miyamoto told Glixel that Nintendo conducted “a lot of experiments that were similar to that back in the N64 days”. There were apparently “some designs that were very similar.”

Miyamoto’s full words:

“I do like Minecraft, but really more from the perspective of the fact that I really feel like that’s something we should have made. We had actually done a lot of experiments that were similar to that back in the N64 days and we had some designs that were very similar. It’s really impressive to me to see how they’ve been able to take that idea and turn it into a product.”

Gamer “Requag” has taken on the task of recreating Pokemon FireRed in Minecraft. It runs through a virtual Game Boy Advance by using structure blocks, which are designed for map makers.

The project isn’t finished just yet. Functions like combat and dialogue aren’t included at this time, but they should be added in later on.

Here’s a look at the progress thus far:

To test out Pokemon FireRed in Minecraft, players need version 1.10 of the game.
