Update: Correction – we’ve now received the official announcement from SEGA. As some have thought, the final name is Chemical Plant Zone. Not Chemical Factory Zone.

SEGA has shared a brand new music track from Sonic Forces. The piece, posted in the video below, is background music for the Park Avenue Stage featuring the Custom Hero Character.

If you’re picking up the Sonic Mania: Collector’s Edition, it’ll cost you $70 (or perhaps a bit less if you have something such as Amazon Prime). But if you’re going for the standard version on the eShop, the game will be priced significantly less. We have confirmation from SEGA that Sonic Mania is planned to cost $19.99 ($25.99 CAD).

Last week, news leaked out through Sonic Mania’s Steam page that the game will be launching on August 15. SEGA has now followed up and made it official.

Here’s a new pre-order trailer:

At the Digital Dragons event in Poland this week, Hirokazu Yasuhara hosted a special presentation. Yasuhara was a designer and director on various Sonic games.

We’ve already seen early Sonic the Hedgehog 2 map sketches, including a look at the cut Genocide City level. But as it turns out, those weren’t the only images Yasuhara shared. One shows that Sonic 2 was originally planned to have a time travel theme while another couple show design sketches from before Sonic 1. Take a look at the latest images below.

Sonic Mania appears to have a final release date. The game now has an official page on Steam, which shows a release date of August 15. SEGA has not yet officially announced this date so the news may very well have been uncovered early.

Sonic Mania was originally planned for release in Spring 2017. SEGA ended up delaying the game to an unspecified period during the summer. With E3 right around the corner, we should be hearing about the new August 15 date soon.

Jurgen Post has been the COO and president of SEGA Europe since 2012. The company as a whole was in a pretty fragile state back then. After having success with Mario & Sonic and Wii, SEGA saw that sales of the series and Nintendo’s console in general were slowing down, prompting a change.

Post spoke about the situation with GamesIndustry:

“The business model that we had wasn’t working anymore. We were starting to make sizeable losses, so we had to change. In the past, you could be successful by being a bit opportunistic. The Wii platform, ten years ago, was so successful and anything you launched on it was selling. Even with some lesser qualitative stuff, you were able to be successful. But that was all changing and you could only sell quality products. We had Mario & Sonic back in those days, and that game was selling so much that a number of other titles could afford to underperform. But when the sales of Mario & Sonic, and the Wii in general, began to slow down, it became very visible that we had to change.”

SEGA ended up going through a whole slew of changes. The company focused on PC, “being consumer-first, and digital-first,” and made sure that its various studios took on more responsibility.

This was actually Post’s final interview at SEGA. He’s leaving the company to take on a new challenge elsewhere. If you’d like to read the full interview, hit up the source link below.

Earlier today, brand new images emerged showing map sketches from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. These were shown by Hirokazu Yasuhara, who worked on the game as a planner.

You can see the images for yourself below. One map is particularly noteworthy, as it shows the cut Genocide City level which never made it into the final game.

SEGA is giving players more control with Sonic Forces. For the first time in the series’ history, players will be able to create and play as their own custom character.

SEGA revealed today that Sonic Forces’ third gameplay style is a powerful gadget touting customizable character. You’ll be able to fully customize how it plays and looks.

Here’s what you need to know:

“In this just announced gameplay style, players will be equipping their custom Hero Character with one of a variety of powerful unique gadgets called Wispons. Wispons are an evolution of the Color Powers from Sonic Colors and double as both offensive abilities and as a way to platform through levels quickly. Along with the Wispon, the Hero Character will have a grappling hook they can utilize to quickly traverse across zones. Players can also customize the Hero Character’s looks by choosing and swapping between hundreds of accessories and outfit options to change the character’s appearance as they play through the game.”

Sonic Forces features seven base animal types that players can select from, each with varying special abilities:
