Star Ocean The Second Story R review

System: Switch
Release date: November 2, 2023
Developer: Square Enix / Gemdrops
Publisher: Square Enix

Star Ocean has been around for a very long time, but for various reasons it has never gained the same sort of recognition or critical acclaim as Square Enix’s other long-running franchises such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. A series that blends science-fiction and fantasy in a mix that might best be described as hit-or-miss across its six installments, it seems to be something that those who have heard of it either embrace wholeheartedly or tactically avoid. But the common consensus amongst fans is that Second Story is the best the series has been to date. After bringing Star Ocean: First Departure R, a port of the PSP remake of the first game, to Switch, Square Enix have now released Star Ocean: The Second Story R, a full remaster of the original game in a new engine with a host of quality-of-life improvements to make it a more modern experience. It is with great pleasure that I say that this is a resounding success, and captures the charm of the original while improving upon it in almost every way possible.

Star Ocean The Second Story R Switch physical download

Star Ocean: The Second Story R appears to be yet another game on Switch with a physical release that requires a download.

Reddit user Casting_Quarters managed to find the RPG at Walmart even though it won’t be out for another week. At the bottom of the boxart, that’s where the dreaded “download required” label can be found. The back mentions that players need to download at least 3GB, but the final size is apparently 4.1GB.

Three upcoming, high-profile Switch games have now received demos – specifically Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, Star Ocean: The Second Story R, and Silent Hope.

Square Enix says that for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, players will be able to transfer the monsters in their main party and reserves into the full game. The same holds true for the Star Ocean demo, which lets players start their adventure and experience the opening hours of the game. Finally, for Silent Hope, the entire first level of the Abyss is included.

As someone new to the Star Ocean series, I had heard so many different opinions on the series over the years that I’d always been curious about jumping in, but not quite sure where to start. Well, apparently the second game in the franchise is regarded by many fans as one of the best, so I was really excited when Star Ocean: The Second Story R was revealed in a recent Nintendo Direct (alongside a jaw-dropping new art style). I was able to demo this remake at PAX West 2023, and left with an extremely positive first impression; exciting combat, old-school strategic depth and outstanding production values are all lining up to make this one of my most anticipated RPGs.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R opening movie

Square Enix and Gemdrops just issued the opening movie for Star Ocean: The Second Story R. This comes ahead of the launch in a couple of months.

Japanese music duo Suiren, comprised of vocalist Sui and keyboardist / arranger Ren, are behind the opening movie’s theme song “Stella”.

Here’s an overview of the game:

Star Ocean The Second Story R graphics not HD 2D

When Star Ocean: The Second Story R was revealed, some may have thought that the game is using an HD-2D art style like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy. But while the two are similar in some ways, they’re actually different.

Producer and director Yuichiro Kitao clarified things in a recent interview with Famitsu. Kitao explained that the backgrounds “were made with real time 3D, and the characters were drawn with a special shader in a way that really sticks in the player’s memory.”

Sonic Superstars

Gamescom 2023 is back in full swing this week, and it includes a number of playable Switch games – namely Sonic Superstars, Star Ocean: The Second Story R, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Off-screen footage is now available for all three.
