Capcom UK shared a new Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice developer interview today. Veterans Takeshi Yamazaki and Motohide Eshiro talk a bit about some of the new features, favorite characters, and more. Watch the full video below.

Siliconera published an interesting interview excerpt today with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice game and scenario director Takeshi Yamazaki. When asked about ideas that were considered, Yamazaki revealed the team thought about having Phoeinx act “as a lawyer in an underground court that served the likes of the mafia and other underworld inhabitants.”

Here are his full comments about it:

“There was one real sticking point while I was writing the design document for Spirit of Justice, and that was how were we going to put Phoenix in a corner, given that he’d become this legendary lawyer in the course of this series.

One idea was to have Phoenix stand as a lawyer in an underground court that served the likes of the mafia and other underworld inhabitants. That underground court would hold trials and render judgment on those who’d broken the rules of the underworld, meaning that even Phoenix would have a tough time believing in his own clients. Furthermore, everyone involved in the trials would be members of the underworld, including witnesses and prosecutors, so naturally, there would be false testimonies, forged evidence, bribes, blackmail, and other dirty dealings going on. Under those circumstances, we figured even Phoenix would feel incredibly like a fish out of water.”

It’s always neat to see what a game could have been. Had Capcom gone in this direction, there’s no question that Spirit of Justice would have been a very different experience.

In one of its recent issues, Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream conducted an extensive interview with some of the developers behind Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. Motohide Eshiro (producer), Takeshi Yamazaki (director), and Takuro Fuse (co-director) participated in the discussion.

There was a ton of talk about the 3DS game in Nintendo Dream’s interview spawning over 10 pages. The developers touched on topics like Maya’s return, ideas left on the cutting room floor, and more.

Last month’s issue of Nintendo Dream has a big interview with Takeshi Yamazaki and Motohide Eshiro from Capcom about all things Ace Attorney. The two developers provided some interesting insight into Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies as well as Ace Attorney 6. It’s several pages long, so we went ahead and made a summary.

The most difficult aspect of developing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies was moving platforms from DS to 3DS. At the time, Capcom hesitated as to whether to keep the series in 2D or make it 3D. Because of the 3DS’ selling point had been about three-dimensional views, they decided to pursue the latter option.

Something similar happened with Ace Attorney Investigations. That title took more time to develop because they needed to create a new gameplay mechanism from scratch. However, when Capcom then made Ace Attorney Investigations 2, they already had the base game set up so they could focus more on the scenario.

Japanese outlet 4Gamer recently had the chance to catch up with a number of prominent staffers at Capcom, who teased the company’s plans for the future. Here’s an overview as to what was shared:

– Deep Down producer/director of the second dev. department Kazunori Sugiura said many titles were announced in 2013
– Some didn’t make it this year and will be announced in 2014
– Those will “surprise the readers a lot”
– Sugiura also encouraged fans to look forward to next year as Capcom intends to reaffirm its presence in the fighting genre
– Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara producer Kenji Kataoka says another classic from Capcom’s history will be revived by the end of 2014
– Can’t say what it’ll be yet
– Announcement about this title when it gets a bit warmer
– Shu Takumi’s new game will be announced next year
– Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies director Takeshi Yamazaki says the team is now working full force on the next title even if things are just getting started
– Unclear if Takumi and Yamazaki team are working on one or more new titles (whether they’re working on the same title or on different ones)
