A few hours ago, Nintendo announced Nindies@Night. The special event, which is taking place the Thursday night before PAX Prime begins, will showcase several independent games for Wii U and 3DS.

Nintendo’s Damon Baker has now made the event all the more interesting, as it sounds like a few game announcements are in store. Baker posted the following on Twitter just a short while ago:

SEGA has been up a translated interview about 3D Gunstar Heroes on its blog today. Producer Yosuke Okunari and M2 president Naoki Horii were interviewed.

During one part of the discussion, the two developers commented on why Gunstar Heroes was chosen to be one of the ports:

Yosuke Okunari: When we first began work on the SEGA 3D Remaster Project, we decided to go with a few arcade titles and a few Mega Drive titles. We believed that if we are able to perfectly emulate the console itself, similar to how we worked on the Virtual Console, we wouldn’t run into as many architectural problems and thus development would proceed according to schedule. Out of the eight titles during the first batch, five of the games were Mega Drive titles and the other three were from the arcade. The intention was to ensure we could actually develop (the much harder) three arcade titles. You see, we made the overall schedule easier to manage by buffering things with the Mega Drive games. Since arcade games tend to vary from game to game in the way they interact with the hardware, by adding these predictable Mega Drive games in, we could better handle delays caused by unforeseen issues on the arcade games. I mentioned this in a previous interview as well, but the reason why we picked the titles that have previously been ported to PS2 or Wii was also to mitigate any unexpected issues. But even taking that into consideration, just having these Mega Drive games in the lineup really helped lock in the schedule. That’s why we had those five titles originally. Since we successfully released the ports for the arcade titles during the first batch, we had a better idea of what the schedule would be for subsequent titles, and that gave us lee-way to work on titles we’d never touched before for the second batch, like Out Run. And now here we are releasing three new games for the second batch, games we decided to pass on the first time around for reasons other than hardware. These are titles that M2 actually refused to develop at the time.

Naoki Horii: We discussed in our previous article about 3D Streets of Rage 2 as to whether or not we would actually be able to get the backgrounds into 3D or now, and one might expect, there were those who said that Gunstar Heroes’ backgrounds wouldn’t be convertible anyway, so it was removed from the list of porting candidates. For example, the background on the 4th stage is not a true isometric projection, but rather it’s just a simple 45 degree angle line going into the screen, and thus is difficult to put into true stereoscopic 3D.

Okunari and Horii also spoke about Gunstar Heroes’ popularity, which is one reason why it was selected.

YO: Gunstar Heroes has been ported to a variety of game systems to date. The number of times this game has been ported is testament to its popularity, and as far as priorities go, this game was on the top of the list and would have been in the first batch.

NH: Oh yes, absolutely.

YO: It’s just the process of converting a game into stereoscopic 3D is a step above normal porting. Originally, this project stemmed from wanting to make a Mega Drive Virtual Console, but these days just a straight port doesn’t really capture the attention of the 3DS audience. I mean, it’s been a rough time for the Game Gear Virtual Console games [on 3DS], you know. And so Gunstar Heroes was regrettable not chosen for a 3D conversion in the first batch.

Image & Form has shared a few new screenshots from SteamWorld Heist on 3DS. All of the images are in the gallery below, and each one contains a QR code that can be used to access 3D screenshots on your system.

In the images, we get a look at a new enemy type: The Royalists. Royalists excel in military tactics and have plenty of tricks up their sleeves.

Also in the screenshots, we can see a Scrapper battle, a still from one of the game’s many narrated cut-scenes, and the bridge of the ship the player controls in the game.

Nintendo and EMP Museum are teaming up for a special indie event next week. Gaming fans in the Seattle area can attend “Nindies@Night” – a celebration of recently released and upcoming indie games for Wii U and 3DS – on August 27 starting at 8 PM.

A total of 19 indie titles will be playable at Nindies@Night, and many of their creators will be available to answer questions and speak about development experience. Also planned are multiplayer competitions for select games, with finalists taking their skills to the giant 60-foot HD LED screen featured in the EMP Sky Church. Nintendo’s Damon Baker will also hold a presentation in the Sky Church at 9 PM.

Admission to Nindies@Night is free and on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who can’t make it may want to check out Nintendo’s “Nindies” lounge during PAX between August 28 and August 31 in the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. This will also feature several playable Wii U and 3DS indie games with developers in attendance from 12 PM to 8 PM between August 28 and August 30 and 12 PM to 6 PM on August 31.

A new update is out for Pokémon Shuffle and with it comes a slew of stages, events, and more!

Darkrai:
Darkrai now has a special event live once you grab the new patch, Version 1.2.12, that grants you the ability to catch the legendary Pokémon. The Darkrai event is slightly different from traditional events, in that this will be performed as an Escalation Battle, which increases in difficulty the more you play but increases the catch rate the higher you go. Once you reach Level 5 of the Darkrai event, you’ll be given an EXP x1.5, Disruption Delay at Level 10, Mega Start at Level 30, and Mega Speedup at Level 50.

New Stages:
Along with the Darkrai event comes a plethora of new stages which puts Pokémon Shuffle’s stage count at well over 200, adding ten more normal stages and three Expert stages.

Rotom Returns:
Rotom makes a return to Pokémon Shuffle giving players another chance to catch the various forms – each one assigned a day of the week – until August 29th. Rotom and its various forms can’t be obtained through normal play, making these special events the only way to get them, so if you haven’t had a chance to collect them all, now’s your chance!

Garchompite Distribution:
Last week a competition was held globally for Pokémon Shuffle fans for a chance at winning a Garchompite if they were able to rank in their respective regions. If you were one of the lucky 40k in North America, 100k in Japan, or 20k in Europe, you should be receiving your Garchompite now soon after you update your game by selecting the Check In button. For those that attempted the stage but didn’t rank, you will still be awarded a Jewel. Let us know if you were able to get the Garchompite!

Nintendo World Report has published a preview of SteamWorld Heist with some additional details. You’ll find them rounded up below.

– Different difficulty settings to choose from
– Image & Form hinted that drops and enemies change depending on this choice
– You no longer have to backtrack to your ship
– Instead, you will have to approach a newly opened passageway and get there safely as possible
– This makes matches faster, but there is less sense of dread
– Even after completing a level, new opponents could still appear and this made it a harsh ride all the way through
– While this still happens in the current version, there is more of a safety net
– Can skip some of the loot, but you need to destroy all of the enemies in the level
– Every character, friend or foe, can only move a set amount of steps and can only do so much once they are settled
– If your steps remain within a certain buffer area, you are able to fire at your opponents
– Not all the gunmen in your crew can hold the gun still and the firearms all act very different from one another
– Some only shoot one strong bullet, while others shoot three weaker ones
– The female captain, Piper, has a gun with reticle right from the start
– You have to bounce shots from walls so you can reach enemies from afar
– Can swap for a different gun that is more effective
– You won’t get any support though
– Use different items to keep yourself in the game
– Healing Oil: recover a robot’s hit points
– Characters wear different hats
– Hats give the people status in this universe
– Every hat and gun also has its own stats and abilities
– Individual crew members will level up, which allow them to better defend themselves
– Unlock new abilities as you progress
– Piper can use a Power Shot right from the get go
– Seabrass, your partner in crime, can use Payback
– This will charge him up when he takes damage
– When ready, the damage he can deal increases by 50%
– Characters have pretty straightforward skill trees
– In the original demo, you could freely explore space and tackle any mission you were interested in
– But the game now has a map screen now, so you will hop to every mission almost instantly
– You can still visit bars and purchase items, as well as recruit members
– These will only join if you have reached a certain level, so you don’t have to straight up pay for them anymore
– You will still lose them if you fail to protect them in battle
