It’s another dose of Nintendo birthdays today! The SNES and amiibo are now a year old.

In Japan, the SNES launched on November 21, 1990. Meanwhile, the first amiibo figures came out one year ago today.

Like I said a few days ago, November is a very busy month for birthdays. The Wii U and Wii, and even Shigeru Miyamoto had their special days earlier this week.

The Game Awards made its debut last year. Although its reception was generally positive, there were certainly things that could have been improved upon. In the video below, show producer Geoff Keighley discusses what sort of changes are in the pipeline for this year’s event.

Famitsu recently conducted a poll to determine what sort of Koei Tecmo Warriors/Musou collaboration fans would like to see.

In terms of games, Fire Emblem was ranked third. Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei also made the list.

Here’s the full ranking for games with some comments from makers:

  1. Touken Ranbu Online – “We’d certainly like to play it, so we’d like to look into making it a reality, but right now we’re focusing on the PC and smartphone versions.”
  2. Type-Moon – “I want to play a Saber-like game where you wipe out an army of seaweed that fill the screen.” (Co-founder Takashi Takeuchi)
  3. Fire Emblem – No comment from the makers.
  4. Neoromance – “Should we seriously propose it?”
  5. Final Fantasy – “The Forgotten Capital quest could be hot.” (Producer Yoshinori Kitase)
  6. Tales of – “Thank you very much, but there aren’t any plans.”
  7. Kantai Collection – No comment from the makers.
  8. Atelier – “Maybe if it has synthesis and collection elements, it will be more RPG-like.”
  9. Shin Megami Tensei – “Get in touch with us anytime.” (Producer Kazuyuki Yamai)
  10. Persona – “It’d be interesting if we could make it one day.” (PR)

The gold Mario amiibo came and went at Walmart back in March. Most figures have received restocks and are fairly easy to find now, but that one is still tough for consumers to get their hands on. The situation might be changing in the near future though.

Walmart recently updated its amiibo terminal, and it no longer shows that gold Mario is an exclusive. This could be a sign of a restock across a wider array of retailers.

Nintendo has managed to prosecute an Italian distributor of hardware that enabled pirated games to run on its devices. In a ruling made by the First Instance Tribunal of Milan, it was decided that the importer of “circumvention devices” such as game copiers and mod chips enabled piracy.

Two other queries were referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), both of which were necessary to see if Nintendo’s use of security was proportionately justified. In the end, it was ruled that circumvention devices were mainly designed to allow illegally pirated software. The CJEU also agreed with Nintendo that its security measures were fair and in line with Italian copyright law.

Nintendo said the following in a statement:

“Nintendo is pleased that this ruling is consistent with a long line of judicial precedents established at national courts in a number of Member States including Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and the UK. This decision is also entirely in line with several decisions from the Italian Supreme Court (Criminal Division) against sellers of circumvention devices as well as a recent ruling from the criminal appeal courts in Florence, which confirmed a first instance criminal decision, against the owners of PC Box.”

Shigeru Miyamoto is celebrating his birthday today. Well, that was technically yesterday at this point since it’s now November 17th in Japan. But in any case… happy birthday, Miyamoto! He’s now 63 years old.

It goes without saying that Miyamoto has had a monumental aspect on Nintendo and gaming as a whole. He’s created some of the most legendary franchises, including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, and plenty more. Although his role at Nintendo has slightly changed, he’s still very involved with a number of games, and we can’t wait to see what he does next at the company.
