Masahiro Sakurai published a new Weekly Famitsu column in the magazine’s most recent issue. In his latest piece, the Smash Bros. director touched on his interest in VR technology.

First, Sakurai expressed interest in seeing VR tied into driving. “I often think to myself, ‘if only this dashboard and stuff around my feet were transparent’,” he wrote. Sakurai most enjoys seeing the world around him while driving, but he can’t see below the front of the vehicle. This is something that he believes would feel exhilarating, and the combination of gaming and VR would make it possible to experience.

Sakurai also feels that VR tech is better suited for games in which the direction of movement is fixed (think driving games). “Because, having two concepts of direction – like with movement of a tank and the rotation of its cannon – is quite complex.”

As for what sort of titles he would like to play, Sakurai commented:

“Personally, I’d like to play Jumping Flash! It’d probably be quite scary, though. You could probably make a crazy Love Plus game as well. A horror game like Resident Evil or Fatal Frame could be good, too.”

Of course, we won’t be seeing any sort of virtual reality elements in the new Smash Bros. titles (“Sadly, such a device is ill-suited for the Smash Bros. game I’m working on right now.”) But Sakurai did say he would be interested in using the tech in a first-person 3D game.

Philips has filed a suit against Nintendo in relation to two patents.

In the case of the first one, Philips believes that Nintendo has potentially infringed upon it deliberately. Philips claims Nintendo is aware of the patent, but has not been willing to take a license and continued violating it. This patent mentions that the technology can be used in conjunction with games.

We’re also hearing that the second patent mentions a wireless device that can be controlled via a secondary device through motion input.

Philips is ultimately seeking damages and a Wii U sales ban.

Here’s an excerpt from Philips’ filing:

In a wide-ranging interview with GamesIndustry, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed the company’s current stance when it comes to Nintendo. Zelnick did say that the company still considers Nintendo to be an “important business partner,” though “we haven’t talked much about it and have nothing announced at the moment.”

Take-Two and its subsidiaries have backed away from Nintendo platforms in recent years. For instance, the company’s only Wii U-related release was the launch title NBA 2K13 through its 2K Sports division.

The emulator was available for several months, but has finally been taken down following a DMCA notice sent out by Nintendo.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata closed out the company’s investor briefing last week by expressing continued dedication to Wii U. His comments came about when one investor questioned the console’s ability to reach a higher level of sales in future fiscal years.

In his response, Iwata recounted how the Game Boy was in a slump before the introducing of Pokemon. He said, “the Pokemon game singlehandedly changed the landscape of the system, which then started to show the strongest sales in the lifecycle of the system.” Iwata’s comment suggests that Wii U could experience something similar if a strong title is introduced.

Regarding Wii U, Iwata did mention that Nintendo “would like to work hard to make sure that we give sufficient momentum to the system so that we can expect good results in and after the next fiscal year”.
