Alph is included in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS as a palette swap for Olimar. Interestingly, it seems as though he was once considered as a full-blown clone character.

That information is based on design documents that come straight from Masahiro Sakurai (and translated by Source Gaming). For the modeling team, Sakurai has a note about Olimar which states: “Consider including Alph (Pikmin 3 protagonist) as a clone character.”

Ultimately, Alph didn’t make it onto the Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS roster. Maybe he’ll be considered again for the series’ next entry…

Rodea: The Sky Soldier was originally slated for a September release. However, in June, NIS America said that the game would be shipping in October instead. Now it may have slipped to November.

Last Wednesday, I received an email from Best Buy stating that Rodea: The Sky Soldier’s launch date had been changed to November 10. I didn’t make too much of it at the time, since one retailer isn’t enough to make any sort of conclusion about a delay. But other prominent retailers like Amazon and GameStop have since modified their listings to this date as well.

Obviously we still don’t have a confirmation about what’s happening with Rodea: The Sky Soldier. These could be retailer mistakes, or the game may have been pushed back for a second time. We’ll try and see if we can get a response out of NIS America.

Thanks to zanmadyne for the tip.

Courses uploaded by the community in Super Mario Maker will feature different difficulty labels. For the most part, this is chosen dynamically as more players try out the level. As an example, if a course has only been completed 10 times out of 150 attempts, you’ll probably notice that it’s in the hard category.

This isn’t the only way that a course in Super Mario Maker will earn its difficulty label. Engadget reports, “user-created levels are also vetted by Nintendo moderators to determine level difficulty before it’s available for anyone to download.”

Yesterday, Nintendo announced that Splatoon’s third North American Splatfest will be taking place next week. The same can now be said of Europe.

Europe’s third Splatfest in Splatoon begins on August 8 at 7 PM, and it will last through the following day. The competition pits the North Pole up against the South Pole.

Nintendo sent out the following message on Twitter earlier today:

Another couple of weapons have been added to Splatoon. Today, players can begin using the Inkbrush Nouveau in addition to the Range Blaster.

Here’s an overview of each:

Introducing the Inkbrush Nouveau, which brings the same abilities as the Inkbrush but has a different sub and special! You’ll be able to lay Ink Mines to catch your foes off guard, and then use the Bubbler when you’re ready to go in for your attack!

As the name suggests, the Range Blaster is a Blaster with shots that travel farther before exploding. It has a lower rate of fire, but who cares when you’re taking people out from clear across the battle field!? The Range Blaster comes complete with the Splash Wall and Inkstrike.

Check out some footage of today’s Splatoon weapons below.
