Wii U

Putting this post up a bit earlier than usual. Feel free to chat away about your hopes, expectations, and whatever else is on your mind regarding today’s Nintendo Directs.

Each presentation will begin at 5 PM ET / 2 PM PT (3.5 hours from now). The North American broadcast is said to last about 41 minutes, while the Japanese one will be roughly 39 minutes.

Updates will be posted on the site throughout the presentations.

A new round of maintenance is expected to take place later today (tomorrow depending where you live) for the online services pertaining to both Wii U and 3DS. The two platforms will be seeing downtime between 9 PM PT and 12 AM PT (12 AM ET and 3 AM ET). Fortunately, the maintenance period seems to be relatively short.

Along with this image, director Masahiro Sakurai posted the following to Miiverse:

Pic of the day. Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day…and the day the new Nintendo Direct airs! It will stream in Japan at 7 AM so it’s going to be a very early morning for us…!

I think it’s safe to say that tomorrow’s Smash Bros. update will be a bit more exciting that this one.

Circle Entertainment recently revealed to Nintendo Everything that the publisher will be bringing Quell Reflect to the eShop. The company’s Chris Chau (producer) as well as FK Digital developers Mickey Lin (director) and Aloner Chiu (assistant director/planner) shared more details about the game in a recent interview.

Head past the break for our full discussion. Along with Quell Reflect, we asked about Wii U, interest in retail, and the Chinese market.

Finally: a new Wii U announcement coming out of Japan. Kamen Rider: Battride War II was originally thought to be a PlayStation 3-exclusive, but Namco Bandai’s newly-opened website confirms a release on Nintendo’s console as well.

Details are as follows:

– Kamen Rider movies are the stage
– Game has a variety of Kamen Rider works from up until the Heisei era
– New power known as “Ultimate Form”
– Ultimate Form: the specific form change from the Heisei era Kamen Rider movie
– Use the power of Ultimate Form to command the fierce battles from the movie and take down strongest enemies
– New riders and formidable enemies
– The latest Rider, Gaim, and a great number of Riders from all 15 works of the Heisei era, will appear
– New enemies included such as adversary Riders
– W and Accel from Kamen Rider W Forever: A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate will appear
– Kamen Rider Eternal‘s Mitsuru Matsuoka will voice Eternal
– Out in Japan on June 26
– 7,120 yen
– 10,450 yen for the “Premium TV & Movie Sound Edition”
– Package will include 40 carefully selected tracks from the TV series and movies on the game disk

Details rounded up from the interview above include:

  • The Wii U GamePad will be used to display a map and upgrades, as well as another function which is yet to be unveiled
  • The game follows an adventure style with currency and upgrades for the characters
  • The game is more “organically” challenging, in that difficulty arises from skill in combat and finding hidden secrets as opposed to enemies just becoming tougher
  • All the levels in the game are connected by the story and its locations
  • You will mainly use two characters at a time during gameplay, but all four will show up in hubs and boss fights
  • There will be points in the game where you are required to use a certain character to proceed
  • The game will be very character driven, with a lot of focus put onto each individual character and their unique abilities
  • We will “definitely” be seeing other characters from the Sonic series making an appearance – these will be revealed over the coming months
  • Inspiration is being taken from Sonic 2, Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Generations

Update 3: Masahiro Sakurai has now retweeted the announcement. Make of that what you will!

Update 2: Davis has now clarified that his tweet was posted without any knowledge of tomorrow’s proceedings. At least that’s one “mystery” solved!

Update: I’ll also mention in passing that the Nintendo Direct news has been retweeted by a couple of folks at PlatinumGames, and Next Level Games’ Brian Davis has also posted about the presentation. I’m not too sure how much we should read into Davis’ tweet, but it’s interesting to see that two prominent Platinum staffers have retweeted the Nintendo Direct announcement.

Original: Does the title above seem similar? It should. When Soraya Saga (Tetsuya Takahashi’s wife) last retweeted news regarding Nintendo Direct, it was for Nintendo’s E3 2013 presentation – and when we last saw “X”.

Saga has once again retweeted news about Nintendo Direct, this time for tomorrow’s broadcast. It’s sparking speculation that X will be making an appearance during the upcoming presentation.

Nintendo did say earlier that tomorrow’s event will focus on games releasing before the end of spring. But perhaps they’ll take the time to show a new trailer for X as well? Maybe, maybe not. Keep those expectations in check, as Nintendo hasn’t specifically mentioned which titles will be shown.
