Let’s Talk #11: How are you liking Splatoon?

Splatoon launched in North America and Europe on May 29. That means it’s been out for exactly one week! Given that, I wanted this week’s Let’s Talk topic to be focused entirely on that game, as well as your impressions.

The nice thing about Splatoon is that it’ll likely be fresh in your memory for at least the next few months. Nintendo has already released new weapons and a multiplayer map even though it’s only been out for a few days. The Inkbrush just came out roughly an hour ago!

So let’s get this Splatoon train rolling. Let us know how you’re liking (or not liking!) Splatoon in the comments below. Have you had a chance to complete the single-player campaign? What do you think of the different multiplayer maps? Any thoughts you have are welcome here!

Highlights from last week’s topic: Do you prefer playing alone or with others?

LordDisco

I honestly like playing solo the most. Don’t get me wrong, I do love playing with my friends and family when the timing is right, but amongst those people, there are only 4 that I can think of that value video games like I do. It is with those people that I enjoy multiplayer with the most, but because I live in Japan and 3 of those 4 friends live in North America, I definitely mostly play alone, which is FINE BY ME.

For me, playing video games is a lot like reading a book. If the game is good, it usually introduces itself well, gets you immersed into the game world, and eventually sucks you in until the end. The nice thing with video games is that they don’t necessarily need a story in order to fulfill this, which is pretty awesome and unique. A game like Pushmo, which has very little story, can still suck you in with a great introduction to the game, puzzles, and world.

I also work extremely long and difficult hours, so when I have down time, I usually just sit down and play. Again, like a book, I love to be pulled away from my reality and enjoy time in a make-believe world of sorts. It’s nice to escape reality and enjoy the fantasy of what video games can offer. Escaping that reality with friends is nice, but mostly, I just like playing alone.

Both. But if I play local multiplayer, it’d have to be with people I have good chemistry with. It’s annoying when some people get competitive and childish instead of enjoying the moment of playing video games with a mate

Back when Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launched in Japan, Nintendo offered a special bundle containing the Toad amiibo. It now looks like this package is bound for Europe as well. Amazon UK and Germany both list the bundle, as does GAME Spain. We’ll see if Nintendo has anything official to announce in the near future.

Some fans have gone out of their way to recreate Splatoon in Minecraft. It’s designed for 4v4 play, though it works with any team size. There’s much more in the YouTube video below as well as its related description.

Next week, Nintendo will be kicking off the first Splatfest for Splatoon in Japan. The game’s Twitter account shares details about what players can expect.

The first Japanese Splatfest is “rice vs. bread” as the best breakfast option, and will be held from 6 PM on June 13 to 6 PM on June 14.

Players can vote via a machine found in the Inkopolis plaza. Voting can only be done once, and your choice cannot be changed. Those who participate will receive a temporary T-shirt with three slots for abilities. You can also use the Miiverse box in Inkopolis to write messages in support of your team.

The first Splatfest in North America will be held in two week’s time.

Back in November 2014, Nintendo shared a trailer for Splatoon in which the single-player campaign was shown for the first time. Interestingly, there are quite a few things were changed or never made it into the release version, such as the arcade-like shooter pictured above. You can get a look at all of the differences in the video below.

Last night, Nintendo added the Inkbrush as a new weapon in Splatoon. Additional footage showing it off can be found below.

A number of new stretch goals have been announced for the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Kickstarter.

The orchestrated tracks goal, which was previously announced, is the most attainable. Bloodstained’s Kickstarter will need to reach $3.75 million for this to happen.

Other new stretch goals for Bloodstained include an online challenge mode ($4 million), third playable character ($4.25 million), prequel mini-game for consoles ($4.5 million), and a portable port of the same prequel mini-game ($4.75 million).

Speaking of that prequel mini-game, here’s an overview of that:

PREQUEL MINI-GAME FOR CONSOLES: Inti Creates is so excited about Bloodstained that they’re hoping to create a 2D, pixel-based, retro-styled mini-game that sheds some light on the world of Bloodstained before Miriam awoke from her coma. This is a complete game which will be sold separately, but every $28+ backer copy of Bloodstained will come with a FREE download of this game on PS4, XB1, Wii U, or PC! (Backers at Physical+Digital tiers will be eligible for 2 copies of the mini-game.)

PREQUEL MINI-GAME FOR PORTABLES: At $4.75 million Inti will port their side story game to the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Backers $28 and up will be able to choose any platform for their free copy (or copies)!

With only six days remaining in Bloodstained’s campaign, it’s admittedly going to be difficult to reach those latter stretch goals. It’s be very neat to see that prequel mini-game happen, however.

You can find Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night on Kickstarter here.
