Cave Story

Cave Story+ is initially set for June 23 on Switch. Down the road, it will be adding a brand new feature.

Nicalis confirmed on Twitter today that local co-op will be added late in the late summer. The company’s brief tweet is as follows:

Thanks to Andrew for the tip.

Headup Games is working with Nicalis to bring The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ to Europe before the end of Q2. When the announcement was made, it was also suggested that the two sides would partner on future releases on well.

Nicalis officially said on Twitter this week that Headup Games will be handling Cave Story+ in Europe. No word on a release date as of now, but the confirmation is nice to have in any case.

Just like with The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, Nicalis will be including some extras with the physical version of Cave Story+. The company teased “a few unannounced goodies” on Twitter, which should certainly include an instruction booklet based on an image included with the company’s message.

Back in the day, an instruction booklet may not have seemed like much. But in this era, physical games often don’t come with anything anymore other than the cartridge / disc in most cases.

Customers will be provided with one of three keychains at random. Quote, Curly, and Balrog are the options.

Earlier this week, Nicalis came forward with the first official news about Cave Story+, which is slated for Switch. The company followed up today with additional details.

Nicalis says Cave Story+ on Switch will be “the definitive version with new challenges, gameplay options and enhancements.” The game will also have “more levels and additional subtle graphic improvements, future free content updates as well as a few bonuses that are yet to be revealed.”

As for the game itself, here’s an overview:

“With its striking blend of platforming action, shooting and exploration, Cave Story+ offers plenty of “twitch” for the Switch. But storytelling is a huge contributing factor to its international success. Through a series of brief and often emotional conversations with various characters, players gradually learn the tragic history of the game’s cast as well as its amnesiac adventurer, whose athletic ability and weapon skills are much more advanced than his appearance would suggest.”

Update (4/4): Now up for pre-order on GameStop.

Original (4/3): A couple of months ago, Nicalis’ Tyrone Rodriguez shared an image of Switch’s Home Menu. It depicted the icons of a few games: The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, 1001 Spikes, Hydra, and Cave Story. We pretty much knew that last game was happening, but now it’s been made official.

Cave Story is coming to Switch as Cave Story+. Like The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, it will have a physical release.

Along with upgraded HD graphics, the game will have seven play modes such as Wind Fortress and Boss Rush, more than twenty boss battles, fifteen levels, ten unique weapons, and four unique endings.

Switch is getting Cave Story+ on June 20. Pricing is set at $29.99.

It was assumed that Nicalis was teasing Hydra (or Hydra Castle Labyrinth) for Switch last month after the company tweeted out an image of the game on the system’s home screen. Now that’s been officially confirmed.

Nicalis’ Tyrone Rodriguez showed Hydra running on Switch during a Polygon live stream yesterday. Additionally, the first gameplay of 1001 Spikes and Cave Story debuted as well. Check out the recording below.

Nicalis technically hasn’t announced Cave Story for Switch, but it’s pretty much safe to say that it’s happening. And judging by a new tweet from the company, a physical version could be on the way.

Nicalis tweeted a few minutes ago:

Nicalis already has two retail releases on the way to Switch in The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ and Redout. It’s likely that Cave Story will be joining the lineup.

Nicalis has revealed plans to bring another two games to Switch. At some point in the future, we’ll be seeing both Cave Story and 1001 Spikes.

Nicalis previously announced The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ and Redout for Switch.

The big (only?) selling point of the DSi was the existence of DSiWare, a collection of downloadable games available for purchase. From cheap, simple titles like Pyoro and other re-released WarioWare games to larger titles that were a bit too niche for a retail release like Wayforward’s Mighty Flip Champs, there was a fair bit worth playing on the service, so I thought it was worth highlighting the best it has to offer – or at least the games you readers claimed to be the best. I personally have minimal experience with DSiWare, only discovering a handful of games through the 3DS eShop, which is why other editors, namely Austin, are giving me a hand in writing this up.

I had initially planned to do all these lists as a “top 10” since it’s the tenth anniversary of the Nintendo DS, but since the DSi has only been out for six years let’s streamline things a bit. Yes, that’s the reason that only six games are on it and not because there were only a few entries that completely dominated the poll.
