Runbow

Update: Rainy Frog has confirmed with us that Runbow is hitting Switch in Winter 2017.

Original: It’s official: Runbow is coming to Switch. Rainy Frog has announced its lineup for the Tokyo Game Show, and Runbow is included.

Stage Clear Studios looks to be handling the Switch port. No word yet on a release date, but we’re hoping it won’t be too far off. Headup Games or 13AM Games itself will likely be handling publishing in the west.

Runbow has already appeared on both Wii U and New 3DS. Could a Switch version be in the works as well? Maybe.

Headup Games, who is publishing Runbow on the PlayStation 4, shared a trailer for the game today. Fans quickly noticed that the YouTube description mentioned a Switch version. When Headup Games was asked about it on Twitter, the line was quickly deleted.

It’s quite possible that this was an error. Then again, 13AM Games has seemingly been teasing plans for Switch as of late:

Even if Runbow isn’t lined up for Switch, 13AM Games definitely appears to be working with the system in some fashion.

New themes based on Runbow were added to 3DS earlier this week. Take a look at the various offerings with the video below.

13AM Games has a couple of updates about Runbow in Europe.

It’s worth noting Runbow Pocket is quite close to release. After experiencing some delays, the portable title is now in certification and a release date will be determined soon.

Also, Runbow Deluxe Edition on Wii U will not be getting a retail release in Europe, despite 13AM Games’ best efforts. The studio explained:

“It looks like after months of trying to find distribution for Runbow: Deluxe Edition in the EU, we are going to officially say that it can no longer be done. We’ve met with a lot of distributors (a lot of distributors), and the fact of the matter is that the Wii U retail support is starting to wind down over in Europe. If you guys are as excited as we are about the Nintendo Switch, then you understand how retailers are looking forward to this new platform. We’re sorry we couldn’t make it work, and really appreciate everyone’s positive attitude trying to make this dream come true.”

As a heads up, 13AM Games is planning a proper DLC for Runbow in Europe. Everything will be discounted by 50% between February 2 and February 16, including DLC.

13AM Games recently came out and said that Runbow Pocket won’t include local multiplayer or StreetPass support. Instead, the team opted to focus on online multiplayer.

Nintendo Life has now received an explanation from 13AM Games as to why local multiplayer features won’t be included. Here’s what the studio had to say:

The way multiplayer options work on the 3DS and New 3DS can go one of two ways… “local multiplayer features” and “online multiplayer.” Local multiplayer features like StreetPass and Local Play use Nintendo’s NEX servers and API and online multiplayer servers work the way we have things in Runbow.

We’re one of the first teams to bring a Unity title to New 3DS. We already faced a few challenges scaling down the game to fit the full Runbow experience, single player and all, into a smaller machine, and on top of that adding different types of networking to our already complex netcode was a risk that we were not comfortable taking. We were left with a choice: Use the online system we already have in place, something that we know works and is fun, or uproot the code and build it for local features instead, while these features were still being added to the Unity engine. The latter option produced an unknowable: how long would this take us? Will it work? How many New 3DS owners are friends with New 3DS owners in the same square mile? Unity has done a great job in helping us with whatever direction we wanted to go, but at the end of the day we thought it was of greater value to our players to give them an online experience where they can play with anyone, anywhere in the world, just like the original Runbow.

Instead of having to find other New 3DS owners, you and your friends can jump into an online game of Runbow anywhere there is a wi-fi connection. Because of this, we also had to forgo the StreetPass features. We know this comes as a bit of a bummer to our fans, but at the end of the day it was important to us to preserve as much of the original Runbow experience as possible. From our massive single player campaign to those wild online matches with anyone in the world.

The retail version of Deluxe on Wii U, known as Runbow Deluxe, is out today in North America. Have a look at the launch trailer below.

13AM Games has been keeping Runbow updated over the past year with new content, but now the studio has confirmed that DLC is coming to an end. Shantae is the latest addition to the game, and now they’re just about ready to move on.

Now the question is: what’s Runbow’s future? It’s been a success for 13AM Games, so that’s something the team is trying to figure out currently.

In an interview with Hardcore Gamer, the developer mentioned:

“We are still figuring out where we are going to take this IP next. There’s a lot that can be done and we love all different types of games. We’ve had fans requests RPGs and Fighting Games in the Runbow family, but the flip side is that it might be nice to work on something else for a bit. I know it’s not much of a concrete answer, but the truth is we are still figuring it out!”

Whatever 13AM Games ends up doing with Runbow, it’ll likely be a hit. Runbow was one of the more successful indie games on Wii U.

Now that Shantae is out now in Runbow as a DLC/update addition, we have some footage of the new character. Check out a few minutes of gameplay below.

Runbow’s latest update is now live. Players can download version 1.3 to play as Shantae as of today. On top of that, 13AM Games implemented a number of new fixes.

In other Runbow news, the Deluxe retail version is now moved to November 1. It’s thankfully a rather small delay.

Head past the break for the full Runbow version 1.3 patch notes.

13AM Games took to its Tumblr page today and shared a bunch of information about Runbow. The game originally debuted last August, but the company has been developing a New 3DS version alongside a retail release for that platform in addition to Wii U.

Speaking of Wii U, Runbow will be out physically on October 25 in North America. It will be accompanied by the final patch including Shantae as a playable character – entirely free.

13AM Games is still tinkering away on Runbow for New 3DS. There were some difficulties along the way, including the implementation of online play, so we’ll now be seeing the portable version in Q1 of next year. Internet connectivity is also taking the focus as opposed to local play and StreetPass.
