This week’s Japanese sales numbers include two big milestones for Nintendo. One is all about hardware, and another applies to one specific game.

First, 3DS has sold over 20 million units in Japan. It’s also important to mention that Splatoon has now sold over 1 million copies in the territory. The game likely already reached that number with digital copies included, though Famitsu’s data officially confirms the figure with physical units. It’s a nice way for Nintendo to close out the year!

Splatoon’s updates will soon be coming to an end, but new content is being added for just a little while longer. The game’s latest map, Piranha Pit, has now joined the rotation. You can see footage of it right here.

Respected Japanese outlet 4Gamer asked 133 Japanese developers – along with some voice actors and pro gamers – about their favorite game of 2015. Representatives from Capcom, Bandai Namco, Koei Tecmo, Square Enix, and more weighed in with their opinions.

It turns out that above all other games, Splatoon was ahead of the pack with 24 top votes. The next closest were Super Mario Maker and Bloodborne with 8 first place votes.

Here are full results:

Splatoon will be updated with the Piranha Pit in just a couple of hours. Get an early look at the map in the video below.

More:

In an interview earlier this year Nintendo stated that distribution of free content for Splatoon would be ending in January 2016. Just now, Nintendo announced that a new map named Piranha Pit will be added to the game starting Tuesday in Japan and around the world. The release time of the new map is as follows:

  • Europe: 3AM
  • UK: 2AM
  • North America (ET): 9PM (today)
  • North America (PT): 6PM (today)
  • Japan: 11AM

Hopefully we see a few more updates and a bit more content added to the game before Nintendo officially stops work on the title next month.

Media Create mentioned last week that Wii U bundles have been helping move hardware units in Japan. The Splatoon and Super Mario Maker sets gave the system a big push in particular during the week of December 7, and that has continued since then.

Regarding the Splatoon bundle, this has for all intents and purposes sold out. Nintendo said on Twitter that it has reached the estimate quantity, so production/shipping has been ended. Consumers who are interested in the Wii U are advised to check out sets such as the ones featuring Super Mario Maker and Genei Ibun Roku #FE.
