Splatoon – Rainmaker videos, overview

A couple of videos are now available for Splatoon’s new Rainmaker mode.
First, here’s some footage from GameSpot:
And an official video from the Squid Research Lab:
Speaking of the Squid Research Lab, here’s an official overview of Rainmaker:
Introducing…. Rainmaker! In Rainmaker, both teams compete to snag the, uhhh, Rainmaker. Once you’ve got it, the goal is to carry it into the other team’s base!
How’s it work, you ask? As soon as the battle begins, grab onto that Rainmaker! It’s guarded by a shield, though, so you’ll need to bust it out first. Once you snag it, head for the other team’s base. And be quick about it!
If you run out of time or get splatted, the Rainmaker will be dropped and its shield will also reactivate. The Rainmaker is crazy heavy, so you can’t Super Jump while carrying it. Hopefully your teammates will watch your back!
But don’t think the Rainmaker is just some shiny object – it can shoot ink like an Inkzooka. You can even hold to charge the Rainmaker up for an extra-powerful shot! The closer you get to the enemy base while holding the Rainmaker, the lower your goal distance will drop. If you retreat too far while holding the Rainmaker, it’ll explode sooner! If the battle ends without anyone carrying the Rainmaker to the goal, the team with the lowest goal distance will win.

There is at least a small bright spot with this situation. Splatoon – European Splatfest #3 results
Posted on 9 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U | 19 Comments
Just like in North America, Splatoon’s third European Splatfest was pretty close. But in the end, the South Pole beat out the North Pole by just a few points.
The North Pole had a very slight edge in popularity. However, because the South Pole won 52 percent of the matches, that side came out on top.
Take a look at the image above for the full results.
Splatoon – North American Splatfest #3 results

The results are in for Splatoon’s third North American Splatfest.
Marshmallows dominated in popularity (64 percent), which ultimately propelled that side to victory. Although the hot dog side had a slight edge in wins (52 percent), it wasn’t enough to overtake marshmallows.
The final score was actually pretty close since wins are now more important than ever. There were 256 points for the marshmallow team and 244 points for hot dogs.

Splatoon producer on the game’s origins, 4-on-4 matches, Super Jump, and name
Posted on 9 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U | 16 Comments
This month’s issue of Nintendo Dream has yet another interview with one of the developers behind Splatoon. This time, the Japanese magazine spoke with producer Hisashi Nogami.
Going back to the origins of Splatoon, Nogami commented on how program director Shintaro Sato came up with the idea of inking. Sato wrote a program for a drawing system, which included affixing textures on models and processing shadows. He thought at the time, “If I replace a shadow with the possibility of repainting with a color, wouldn’t that be a new way to play?”
Nogami also spoke about the decision to feature 4 on 4 matches in Splatoon:
Nogami: It’s not like we couldn’t have made 3 vs. 3 battles, but if just one player is splatted, the balance changes drastically and the enemy team can make a push in one go.
Nogami: On the other hand, when we tried increasing the number of players, the effect of splatting one person was small.
Nogami: However, when we tried 4 vs. 4, just splatting one player got the other team into a quite unfavorable situation. It is like a power play in ice hockey.
