Kimishima on decision to step down as Nintendo president, Furukawa’s goals, many unannounced Switch games

Shuntaro Furukawa is taking over for Tatsumi Kimishima as global president of Nintendo in June. At a news conference, Kimishima spoke more about stepping down as well as having Furukawa assuming his previous role.
Kimishima said he made his decision since he “fulfilled almost fully his responsibilities” to turn around Nintendo. He also noted that it was becoming difficult for him to fly around due to his age, and the better-than-expected sales momentum of the Switch sparked the idea to bring in someone else for the president’s position.

Nintendo Labo sold through 25% of its initial shipment in Japan

Nintendo Labo debuted in Japan on April 20. Through April 22, the Variety Kit sold roughly 90,000 units. The Robot Kit was significantly less popular with around 30,000 units.
According to Dengeki, Nintendo Labo only sold through 25% of its initial shipment. That tells us Nintendo sent out close to 500,000 units, but most are likely sitting on store shelves.
It’s worth pointing out that this period is a generally slow time for gaming sales in Japan. With Golden Week taking place in a few days as well as the summer approaching, sales could pick up.

There’s one more notable appointment stemming from the financial report Nintendo published today. Going forward, Takashi Tezuka will be an Executive Officer on Nintendo’s board of directors.
Tezuka joined Nintendo in 1984 and has been key in many classics. He was the director of early hits like Super Mario World and Zelda: A Link to the Past, and has continued to be involved with development through today.
Despite being an Executive Officer, Tezuka will still be a Senior Officer in Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning & Development division.
