Nintendo Account next-gen

Nintendo has regularly talked up the importance of Nintendo Accounts, including this week during its financial results briefing. We heard that the total number of accounts is now at 290 million.

The topic of Nintendo Accounts was again brought up during the Q&A portion of Nintendo’s financial results briefing this week, including how it relates to next-gen hardware. Director / senior managing executive officers Shinya Takahashi and Ko Shiota both weighed in.

Here’s what was shared:

Mario Bros movie Shigeru Miyamoto

Many games have been adapted for the big screen over the years, but more often than not, they don’t turn out that well. Nintendo is now taking its first shot in this area with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an animated take on its legendary platforming franchise.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto believes that the upcoming film will solve issues that have previously impacted film adaptations of games. During a financial results briefing this week, he said that two problems have been kept in mind. The first is that “with video games, it is the gaming experience that makes them compelling, so a movie that adheres to the story of a game will not necessarily be interesting.” Also brought up is how “people who have played the game will expect a movie experience that is faithful to their memories of the game, while those who have never played the game will expect a movie that is enjoyable as an independent piece of entertainment.” Miyamoto said that Nintendo and Illumination “spent a significant amount of time trying to figure out how to overcome these two challenges.”

Miyamoto’s full words:

Shigeru Miyamoto tackled a question this week during Nintendo’s financial results briefing this week regarding backwards compatibility. One investor asked about internal conversations Nintendo has had about this.

Miyamoto acknowledged that “software development environments have recently been gradually integrated”, which means that the concept behind backwards compatibility is now easier to accomplish At the same time though, the focus for Nintendo – which is usually the case – is “to offer new and unique gameplay that cannot be realized on existing hardware.”

Miyamoto said:

Whenever someone has a chance to speak with Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, the possibility of a price increase for Switch tends to be brought up. Furukawa has addressed the topic multiple times, including once again this week during a financial results briefing Q&A.

Just as we’ve heard before, it was stated that “there are no plans to raise the price of our hardware.” It is worth noting though that Furukawa left the door open just slightly having mentioned that “the yen has depreciated at an unexpected level for a long duration, so we will carefully consider as we monitor the situation going forward.”

Furukawa stated:

Splatoon 3 has been off to a strong start worldwide, but in Japan, the game has really been dominating. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa spoke about why the game’s initial sales were higher than expected in the region during a financial results briefing Q&A this week.

Furukawa brought up the “market environment” that picked up during the summer plus the release of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak as well as releases like Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Kirby’s Dream Buffet, and the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass. It also sounds like the Splatoon 3 Splatfest World Premiere was especially a hit in Japan.

According to Furukawa:

During the Q&A portion of Nintendo’s financial results briefing last week, president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about how the company is thinking about increasing the amount of people subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online and make it more appealing.

Furukawa pointed out that year’s addition of the Expansion Pack tier with N64 games “is accounting for a gradually increasing proportion of overall memberships”. As for the future, Nintendo is “considering various initiatives, including further enhancements to the content of the service.” Furukawa added that “Nintendo Switch Online as our initiative to encourage our users to continue to enjoy Nintendo Switch for many years to come.”

Ash Ketchup champion Masters Eight Tournament

The Pokemon anime isn’t something we discuss here too often, but we’re making an exception due to a significant event in the series: Ash Ketchum is the official champion and has become the top Trainer in the Pokemon world after winning the Masters Eight Tournament of the Pokemon World Coronation Series. This just happened in the latest episode of Pokemon Ultimate Journeys: The Series, which premiered today in Japan and will air worldwide in the future. The win is significant since it’s a culmination of Ash’s adventures in the Pokemon world spanning 25 years.

Over the course of Ash’s journey which started in the Kanto region, Ash and his Pikachu have battled numerous rivals. They’ve participated in tournaments before, but they’ve come short of a tournament victory. Ash Ketchum now secured the title of the first-ever Pokemon League Champion at the Manalo Conference in the Alola region.
