General Nintendo

Despite what has said previously, some have remained concerned about Nintendo becoming a health device company following their Quality of Life announcement plans.

But no need to worry; this simply won’t happen. Nintendo’s Genyo Takeda reiterated last week, “we are not aiming to become a health device company”.

He said:

Nintendo delivered a little bit of a mixed message about the future of Iwata Asks during its Annual Meeting of Shareholders last week. Genyo Takeda mentioned that the series will return once Satoru Iwata returns from his health issues, while Shigeru Miyamoto said the lack of interviews is because the company “came up with the idea that Nintendo should try to attract a more broad audience through a wider range of methods.”

In any case, here are the full comments about the situation:

Pac-Man in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS

Pac-Man is joining the Super Smash Bros. series for the first time through the upcoming Wii U and 3DS games. However, it turns out that the classic character could have been included in the previous entry, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Masahiro Sakurai wrote in the latest issue of Famitsu that Pac-Man was a possibility for Brawl courtesy of a suggestion from Shigeru Miyamoto:

“During development of Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo approached me and asked, ‘Can’t we have Pac-Man as a guest character?’ At the time, imagining the image of Pac-Man and his incomplete pizza shape, I thought to myself, ‘Hmmm… That’s a little too farfetched.'”

Sakurai also mentioned in his column that coming up with character ideas for a Smash Bros. game may seem easy, but it takes a great deal of work to implement on the development side.

If there was any ever question as to whether or not the ‘smart toy’ industry enveloping games like Disney Infinity and Skylanders was representing a new trend in the industry, a recent GameByte study has shown that over 72 millionĀ children are interested in purchasing the toys. Here’s a summary of what they found:

  • 72 million chidren are interested in owning ‘Smart Toys’
  • The US has plenty of choice in the market already
  • Growth opportunities exist in emerging gamer markets – China, Brazil, Russia where 90%+ of gamers age 6-12 are interested in smart toys
  • GameByte thinks that LEGO Fusion and Amiibo will help the marker further

Shovel Knight has been highly trumpeted by Nintendo since the game’s early days of development, up through release. Heck, the title is even playable at the Nintendo World store right now.

All in all, Yacht Club Games’ Nick Wozniak says Nintendo has “been really accommodating to our weird requests, and getting stuff done to see if they can promote us better.”

You can find Wozniak’s full comments about working with the Big N below.

Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning is open to remaking another one of the series’ entries, Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus.

Lanning told Wired that it may very well be the next project the team takes on depending on success. If New ‘n’ Tasty sells well, we should eventually be seeing Abe’s Exoddus in HD.

Lanning said:

With success, yes. The number one thing is selling games — when they profit, we can make more games. With success, Exoddus will be the next game we make and with a LOT of success we’ll start making new IPs.

Also while speaking with Wired, Lanning discussed why it wasn’t possible for Oddworld Inhabitants to make a new IP. The studio ended up rebuilding Abe’s Oddysee since that’s what fans requested the most.
