Disney Illusion Island gameplay

A bunch of gameplay is now available for Disney Illusion Island, which just launched on Switch this week. We’ve got a look at the animated cinematics, Metroidvania aspects, and more.

You can find further details about the game in the following overview:

Super Mario Bros Wonder villain

Super Mario Bros. Wonder received its official ESRB rating today, and it includes a tiny bit of new information – including a detail about the main villain that most had probably expected. Spoilers to follow, but there isn’t anything overly specific here.

Metroid Dread development

MercurySteam CEO Enric Álvarez has discussed working with Nintendo and the development of Metroid Dread. This comes as part of an interview with Gamereactor.

The Switch title marked the second collaboration between the two sides following Metroid: Samus Returns, a remake of the Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus. Álvarez said both companies “have an excellent understanding of each other”. He indicated that Nintendo is open to new ideas while MercurySteam was “hungry for leaving our own mark on the franchise.”

Sword and Fairy Inn 2 trailer

A final launch trailer has come in for Sword and Fairy Inn 2, which ties in with the Switch release. The life simulation RPG came to the console this week.

Further information is available in the following overview:

Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara launch trailer

Chibig has come out with a launch trailer for Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara. This week, the 3D puzzle platformer released on Switch.

Additional information is included in the following overview:

Kirby Switch controller PowerA

PowerA is planning a new Switch controller design for Kirby, and you’ll be able to pick it up very soon. This is different from the other colorful design we posted about last year.

The wireless controller is similar to the company’s other offerings, but this is a pretty unique design. It includes two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons that you can program at any time, precision tuned analog sticks, a full size d-pad, a LED indicator for player number, button mapping, and low battery warning, plus more. However, it does not support HD Rumble, the IR camera, motion controls, or amiibo NFC.

Pickleball: Smash

It’s been a busy past week or so for GameMill with the company announcing a variety of games including most recently Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, and the news continues with the reveal of Pickleball: Smash. It will arrive this November on Switch.

As the name implies, Pickleball: Smash is a sports title and the game will even support motion controls on Switch. For further details, check out the following overview:

Pokemon Presents rumor August 2023

New information has been uncovered suggesting that a Pokemon Presents presentation could be happening in August.

Fans have been digging through the latest update for Pokemon Masters EX – specifically version 2.35. Some code is included that mentions a campaign start date of 1691499600. That essentially translates to August 8, 2023.

Original: A new article from Game Informer has outlined all of the Emerald Powers in Sonic Superstars. Each one provides something unique, though of course there’s something special for collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds as well.

Disney Illusion Island review

System: Switch
Release date: July 28, 2023
Developer: Dlala Studios
Publisher: Disney Electronic Content

Mickey, Minnie, Donald & Goofy may be some of the most recognizable characters of all time, but it’s been a hot minute since they featured in a noteworthy game of their own – something true of many Disney franchises since the shuttering of Disney Interactive in 2016. As such, Disney Illusion Island is something of an experiment; an attempt to craft a modern, original Mickey Mouse story in a new world with new characters, with the structure of a Metroidvania (or “Mickeyvania,” as the developers have put it). While a lack of meaningful surprises can cause the experience to drag and feel overly simple, the game’s charming humor and silky-smooth platforming result in a fun and amusing adventure.
