Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Nintendo has announced a pair of new tournaments: the Splatoon 2 North America Inkling Open 2019 and the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate North America Open 2019. Open qualifiers will be held online, leading to a final event at PAX East at the end of March. Nintendo will be live streaming the finals for each online event.

We’ve included the full schedule below. That also includes the official announcement from Nintendo and a promotional video.

Last week, we posted a translation of a column from Sonic the Hedgehog series sound designer Tomoya Ohtani in which he spoke about working on some Splatoon music from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Sonic Team sound director Jun Senoue had his own contribution having worked on a new Mega Man 4 medley.

Why did Senoue go with Mega Man for his music piece? He discussed that and more in his own column, which we now have a translation of as well. You can read it in full below.

As first announced a couple days ago, the Fire Emblem Fest Part 2 Spirit Board event is now live in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Players will have an increased chance of running into some Fire Emblem-based Spirits that were not featured on the Spirit Board during the first Fire Emblem Fest event.

The event is set to last over the weekend. Some of the Spirits highlighted are included below.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai published a new column in this week’s issue of Famitsu. While there was some talk about the Switch game, Sakurai touched on a few other interesting topics as well.

In his piece, Sakurai started out by writing about a couple of games he’s been playing. He also discussed his own personal way of playing Smash Bros. Ultimate at the moment, and thanked fans for their support having sold 5 million copies in its first week. The piece also brings up creating entertainment, regrets, and the Japanese games industry.

Nintendo has announced that the second part of the Fire Emblem Fest Spirit Board event will be held this weekend in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Starting January 18th and rolling through the weekend, characters from the Fire Emblem series will be the focus once again. As previously noted, some Spirits not included in the first part of the event will now show up more often.

Based on the image, this will include increased appearance rates for the Azura, Takumi, and Leo Spirits — as well as many others.

One of the most impressive aspects about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the game’s soundtrack. Over 800 songs are included, and a bunch of different composers contributed to the final product.

Tomoya Ohtani, the series sound designer for Sonic the Hedgehog, is one such person who worked on the tracklist. Ohtani was responsible for the new arrangement of Bomb Rush Blush – a piece of music originating from Splatoon. Ohtani posted an interesting column last month that details how he settled on Bomb Rush Blush, the way in which he went about changing it for Smash Bros., and more.

The latest Spirits event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now live. As previously announced, instead of specific spirits appearing, this event will let you earn double the EXP and SP on the Spirit Board.

Nintendo will be hosting a new Spirit Board event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate starting later this week. This time around, the theme is that the rewards handed out will be doubled. That means more experience and SP for everyone.

The latest Spirit Board event kicks off on January 11. It’ll last for three days.

As billed earlier in the week, the “Now You’re Playing With Spirit Power!” Spirit Board event is now live in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Players will see an increased spawn rate of iconic characters from the NES, Famicom, and the Famicom Disk System up until midnight of January 7th.

Throughout the event, users will also encounter the Donkey Kong and Lady, Link (The Legend of Zelda), and Sukapon Legend class Spirits as the focus of the time period.
