Surprise!

All the way back in July, Nintendo Everything’s weekly podcast “Here’s a Podcast” ended abruptly with a strange-yet-totally-normal episode about, among other things, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. In a few weeks, all three podcast crew-members are going to be back together in the same city, and they all felt like it would be appropriate to record another episode as a parting gift to you all until further notice. Now, I smashed my finger under a couch earlier so it hurts to type, which means I am going to make this brief:

If you were a fan of the podcast, we’d love if you would do us a solid and send us some listener questions mail to [email protected]. We’ll need some for the show, after all! You can include parting words if you like– maybe some favorite moments from the 102 episodes prior– or just a regular old question; the future of the podcast looks at least semi-hopeful, but just in case… you may want to consider these your last emails ever!

I’d expect the podcast to be put up either the weekend of December 6th or December 13th.

Paper Skyrim.

The defining feature of Nintendo’s Paper Mario series is, undoubtedly, its warmth. Characters and locales that are at once unbelievable and entirely lovable, supported by music that makes you forget you’re not a kid anymore, all tied together by a simple but enjoyable story of saving the kingdom from certain doom.

The defining feature of Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls series is, undoubtedly, its scope. Hundreds of quests, hundreds of hours, and a seemingly endless amount of trivial– but altogether enjoyable– gameplay to partake in.

Fantasy Life isn’t perfectly described as a combination of these two philosophies, but thinking of it in those terms would give you a fair idea of what to expect if you opted into this Level 5 adventure. It’s a tempting concept, after all: What if you could live in the world you just saved for as long as you like? What if you never had to leave those characters and locations behind after the credits had receded above the top screen of your 3DS? The possibility of harnessing the emotional weight that an adventurous tale lends to a world and then channeling it into an endless farming game (not just farming of course, but you follow) is an intriguing domain that would seemingly take a considerable amount of work to map and conquer. But Level 5 decided to grab their best cartographers and venture into the unknown, and thus Fantasy Life has burst forth onto the 3DS, covered with bruises and a few broken bones, but with a completed map of that intriguing domain nonetheless in tow.

(podcast crew note: Oh, how we wish the news wasn’t true! But it is. Here’s a Podcast has to take its leave from NintendoEverything after 102 wonderful episodes. I know I know, it’s bad etiquette to leave on short notice. But then, we never were much for etiquette! Thank you if you’ve ever listened, and with any luck you’ll hear from us again. Maybe this is the end, but maybe it’s not– only time will tell. If you have questions or concerns, you can reach out to the three of us on Twitter: Jack, Laura, Austin)

ON THIS EPISODE: Bad news is abound, as the cast and crew (which is really just the cast) announce an indefinite hiatus from Here’s a Podcast. Life becomes complicated, and all good things must end! They’re very sorry for the suddenness, and hope that something resembling Here’s a Podcast will return one day.

PLUS: There’s still an episode though, just as you’ve always liked it! Jack is back, and he assists discussions of BIT.TRIP Core and Fallout: New Vegas in the ‘What We Played’ sections. After a lovely break, listener mail makes a return and we answer a variety of questions on “how” we play games, what the music for the Wii U Zelda game will sound like, and more!

AND: The finale of this final episode has us back to discussing A Link to the Past, including some fantastic observations about the temple design, how this game differs from the rest of the series, and much, much more.

Question of the day: How do you feel about the way A Link to the Past handles its items? They tend to be less “key”-like and more organic, but is that a good thing or a bad thing? Or maybe neither? Listen to the podcast for elaboration.

ON THIS EPISODE: We skipped last week, but maybe we should have skipped this week! A still-sick Austin and a tired Laura scrape together a short show this week where they basically only discussion A Link to the Past for the book club, and then go through some shorter bits of listener mail.

PLUS: Nothing! That’s it. Just book club and listener mail.

Hey guys, it’s Austin with just a small update: Due to reasons, we’ll be skipping on doing the podcast this week! Really sorry for those that were looking forward to it– if you sent in listener mail (which several of you did!) we’ll get to it on next week’s show. If you just HAVE to hear people talk about video games this week, I recommend checking out Just a Chat, where Austin and Brian from this website right here talk about stuff in video games.

Sorry again. We’ll be back next week, and I think Jack might be with us!

Question of the day: Is it always bad design to allow a game-player to enter situations that they aren’t prepared to succeed in without telling them or giving them an easy way out? Is it ever okay to make something practically impossible? Like this horrible, traumatic area from Fallout: New Vegas pictured above?

ON THIS EPISODE: Can you believe we made it 100 episodes? Even though Jack and Aysha aren’t around to celebrate, Laura and Austin manage to pull together another solid episode for everyone.

PLUS: Laura kicks things off with some impressions of some survival horror PC games like Outlast, and then Austin discusses the idea of games letting you face things you simply aren’t prepared to face without telling you through the lens of Fallout: New Vegas. Some brief discussion of BIT.TRIP BEAT and BIT.TRIP CORE round out the segment.

AND: We pick our short book club game, which will be The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past! Listen for more details, or just start playing at your leisure. Listener mail, of course, closes things out.

ON THIS EPISODE: Still no Jack and Aysha’s out of town, which means it’s the first even Laura and Austin podcast! What we played? The duo square off about Tomodachi Life getting boring, Shovel Knight being wonderful, and Fallout: New Vegas actually having kind of good storytelling.

PLUS: A new mini-bookclub has been announced. The options? Minish Cap, A Link to the Past, Another World, Stick it to the Man, and Attack of the Friday Monsters! Make your case for which one we should all play and discuss in the comments.

AND: Listener mail about Suda51, “boring” games, and why nobody ever talks about bad game soundtracks in reviews rounds out the end of the show, as usual.

Update: Full transcript below!

Also available on 3DS! Austin takes on the newly released first-ever game from Yacht Club Games. Is it any good? Oh no, you’ll just have to watch the review to see. (Want to skip the analysis? Go to 10:51 for the recommendation on who should buy it and who shouldn’t)

NOT ON THIS EPISODE: Jack and Laura! Jack has to take a break from the podcast for several weeks and Laura will likely be intermittent for a few weeks as well. The show… will be different…

ON THIS EPISODE: Special guest Aysha fills in to help save the podcast! Her and Austin talk about the Mass Effect 3‘s lost charm (but it’s still got romance) and Tomodachi Life‘s charm overload, and Austin bring his impressions of upcoming indie game Shovel Knight.

PLUS: Listener mail rounds out the end of the show! We’ve got topics from Nintendo’s E3 performance to whether we think walkthroughs ruin a game experience.

This is a video showing you sort of what you expect from the core gameplay of Shovel Knight. It’s edited to remove various little secrets, but basically if you watch this you’ll have an idea of how the game plays.
