switch 3ds wii u eshops down outage christmas

It’s Christmas day, so you know what that means: an outage for the Switch, 3DS, and Wii U eShops with all of these digital stores currently down for some.

December 25 tends to be one of the busiest days of the year for the eShop. With so much gift giving taking place, new systems are booting up and connecting online for the first time. Others are merely browsing the eShop to purchase and redeem digital games.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale

It’s time for the latest North American Nintendo Download report for the week of December 16, 2021. The latest releases include Chicory: A Colorful Tale, Dungeon Munchies, Let’s Play! Oink Games, Timelie, and more.

Nintendo has added to its maintenance schedule, and a few more sessions are lined up for the next couple of weeks. There’s only one period planned for next week, but even more for the following week.

Nintendo eShop

Rumor has it that Nintendo is less than a year away from accepting submissions for games on the 3DS and Wii U eShops.

Impact Game Station claims to have received an email, likely from a developer, that outlines plans for the end of new titles. The supposed deadline will go into effect on April 1, 2022, which is when Nintendo’s next fiscal year starts. Developers are advised to have their projects “lotcheck approved latest within 3 months after the submission deadline.”

More:

At the start of next year, credit cards will no longer be supported on the 3DS and Wii U eShops – at least in Japan. Nintendo just announced that this aspect of the service will be discontinued on January 18, 2022. Other prepaid IC cards will be impacted as well.

All other aspects of the 3DS and Wii U eShops will remain functional. System owners can still buy games, download already-purchased titles, and more. Payment can be done through other means like Nintendo’s official eShop cards and by linking a Nintendo Network ID to a Nintendo Account on Switch and having a shared balance across devices. Nintendo’s website also supports credit cards.

Nintendo has not yet said if there will be any changes to credit cards in other territories.

It looks like Metroid: Samus Returns is not the only Metroid game that is getting a boost in sales from the recently announced Metroid Dread. The Wii U Virtual Console is also seeing its own Metroid boom, as Metroid: Zero Mission sits at number 1 on the best sellers list and Metroid Fusion ranks at number 2. Even Metroid Prime: Trilogy is coming in at number 4 on that list of best sellers.

This is no doubt due to the hype behind Metroid Dread being announced at E3 2021, and it shows a trend with the Metroid: Samus Returns rising in the sales charts on 3DS. We’ll see if the trend continues leading up to Metroid Dread’s October 8 release.
