Japan just had one of its best weeks in a long while in terms of gaming sales. Dragon Quest XI finally launched to huge success, and Nintendo shipping out a steady supply of Switch units also helped.

Console-wise, the sales of all 3DS systems combined sold 417.62 percent more than last week. Again, part of this was due to the release of Dragon Quest XI. Square Enix also put out a special Liquid Metal Slime New 2DS XL design, which was no doubt purchased by many consumers.

Famitsu has reported that Dragon Quest has sold a total of 2,080,806 copies in Japan within the first two days of the game’s release. The 3DS version of the game sold 1,130,468 copies, while the PlayStation 4 version sold 950,338 copies.
The copies sold also include the sales from the Dragon Quest XI Double Pack Hero’s Sword Box, New Nintendo 2DS XL Dragon Quest Liquid Metal Slime Edition, and PlayStation 4 Dragon Quest Loto Edition.

Dragon Quest XI is out now in Japan but will also be releasing next year in the west under the name “Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age”.

Splatoon 2 wasn’t the only notable game to have released in Japan last week. Layton’s Mystery Journey also saw its debut. Dengeki reports that the game sold through 75 percent of its initial shipment.

That’s not too shabby of a number, and we also have to remember that the game was distributed on mobile. Dengeki does point out though that first week sales were less than Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy’s debut of 128,000 at launch. It went on to sell 283,000 copies on the whole.

The latest issue of Famitsu has shared a listing of the top 30 best-selling games in Japan for the month of June 2017. You can check out the full results below.

Splatoon 2’s release helped boost overall software sales in Japan last week. Between July 17 and July 23, there was a 251.55 percent increase at a total of 987,000 copies sold on the whole.

Switch also sold about 100,000 units. It was the second best week for the system – only behind the initial launch – and also raised overall Japanese hardware sales to 169,000 units. Sales were up 128.18 percent from last week.
