Splatoon

This week’s issue of Famitsu has another update on Splatoon. There isn’t too much, but a few more bits and pieces of information are included in the magazine.

Here’s the latest:

Controls
Left Stick – Movement
ZL – ‘Squid’ (only while pushed)
Gyro Sensor (Aim – can be turned off)
Right Stick – Look left & right. Push in for Special Weapon.
R – Sub Weapon
ZR – Ink Shot
X – Jump
Y – Camera Reset

– Squid form is faster than human form, but can’t move outside of ink
– Jump is more or less the same for both human and squid forms, but while moving through your own color ink, you can jump further
– Can reach places you can’t in human form
– These include places that might prove vital in winning

The next Splatoon update will be in the March 5 issue of Famitsu. We’ll hear more about the Octarians.

Today’s Splatoon Twitter image is… interesting. A shoe is shown, which comes from one of the fashion brands in the game. Information is posted below.

There are fashion brands in the Inkling world, just like we have in ours
This is a sports brand called ‘Arome’.
They develop stylish, hi-tech shoes.
Whether they combine gear from the same brand, or mix and match, Inklings enjoy coordinating their outfits.

Famitsu published its full interview with the developers behind Splatoon on its website today. Producer Hisashi Nogami, director Yusuke Amano, and co-director Tsubasa Sakaguchi participated in the discussion.

Siliconera translated some excerpts from the interview. You can find a summary of what was shared below.

“Many staff members that have worked on Wii U launch titles are working on this game, so now that we have a grasp of the Wii U’s functions, it started out with discussions about wanting to make something new with what we already know. There were many plans, but the one that stayed until the end was Splatoon.”

– Nogami says that it was just around the time Sakaguchi finished working on Nintendo Land, and Amano with New Super Mario Bros. 2, that Splatoon’s plans began
– Wasn’t always about squid characters
– Originally had tofu-like square characters
– Eventually chose to make it a competitive 4-on-4 game that required spraying the environment with ink

Another few Splatoon screenshots have arrived on Twitter. View them above, and a translation below.

Investigative Report.
The Roller allows you to paint the ground as you move around, but if you shake it, you can spread ink over a wide area. So, while it’s got a short range, but it can unleash a powerful attack.
Apparently, rolling around right after using the powerful shake feels really good.

We’ve posted these screenshots from the Japanese Splatoon Twitter account over the past month or so. However, they’ve now been distributed in English, along with English descriptions for all images. View the full set below.

From sandals to boots and everything in between, Shrimp Kicks has the hottest selection of Inkling footwear. With such a delicious…I mean, uh, professional-looking salesman, it’s no wonder the store is so popular! If you see a pair of kicks you like, snap ‘em up before they’re sold out!

Participating in battles seems to be the key to earning experience and raising your rank. This rank is the yardstick by which your “coolness” will be measured!

Breaking news! In this crazy squid society, “coolness” is apparently a pretty big deal. So much so, in fact, that the shopkeepers won’t even give you the time of day if you’re not cool enough. Battle it up to make sure you’re as fresh and fly as possible before trying to buy the latest gear.
