Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still has a few DLC characters to go before the game is fully complete. With coronavirus still having a major worldwide impact, director Masahiro Sakurai is changing his approach to development. On Twitter, Sakurai confirmed that he’s now overseeing and supervising the game remotely.
Sakurai did say that this is a difficult process largely in part due to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being a “high security project”. That being said, he has no choice but to work on future updates this way.
The next DLC character from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was recently announced to be from ARMS, who will be unveiled and released in June.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai and Undertale creator Toby Fox have revealed the original design for Sans in the Switch title. While not massively different from the final model, Sans originally had tiny fingers. According to Fox, he “asked them to replace them with a larger mitten-like hand instead.” You can see what the initial design looked like above.
Sans is one of the more recent Mii Fighter costumes we’ve seen in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that represents an indie game. Cuphead is another example of this type of collaboration.

Shovel Knight is represented in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – just not as a playable character. Use the Assist Trophy item, and if you’re lucky enough, the character will appear to help you in battle.
Speaking with Fanbyte, Yacht Club Games founder Sean Velasco said that having Shovel Knight playable in Smash Bros. was “never really in the cards.” The studio considered possible moves for him, though it sounds like Nintendo only ever approached the team for its Assist Trophy cameo.
Sakurai’s full comments on the coronavirus and how it may impact Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC
Posted on 4 years ago by Oni Dino(@Oni_Dino) in News, Switch | 0 comments
In Masahiro Sakurai’s most recent column in Famitsu, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director touched on the topic of COVID-19 (coronavirus) affecting the games industry. Sakurai stressed the difficulty the industry is facing when it comes to development specifically, because the nature of the job is handling very confidential material which can’t be taken home. He also expressed his concerns for workers with young children to look after (considering schools have been closed), as he says those people might be forced to take off work.
Of particular note to gamers, Sakurai vaguely detailed how COVID-19 has affected development on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s DLC fighters. Apparently, some plans for a certain fighter have been put on hold for the time being.
